The day after the blog's 9th birthday (which was this past Thursday if you missed it), I received the final 6 cards of the 2013-14 OPC set to finish off the 9th of 10 sets that I started out the year to complete. First off, I'm going to show the 3 cards I purchased on eBay to get to the final 6...
I've made purchases like this before on eBay, and usually come out pretty happy. It was one of those deals where the seller sets a flat price, then in the listing has the actual prices of all the cards they have for sale. For me, this worked out well, as some of the prices for these 3 cards (especially the Galchenyuk) border on the high side, even for talented players. The cards cost me $12, as the dealer knocked a couple of dollars off the shipping cost which I thought was pretty decent.
The seller's name is duckshockeyfan and as you might have guessed deals strictly with hockey cards. I'll certainly be heading back to them to finish up another set or two in the future.
The other 6 SPs from this set came from all the way up in Thunder Bay, ON as Rusty (TCDB ID:rustyk) was kind enough to send me these in a deal in which I messed up and surely forgot to send everything that was promised from my end. I truly wonder if working from home and being a hermit as I am now is starting to mess with my brain a little.
To make up for my mistake I found a few extra cards to send his way, hopefully they get there in the next week or 2 with how the mail is going right now.
All right, just one set left on the New Years list, 1974 Topps. It's down to 35 cards to go with a purchase and a trade or 2 that have come in recently. The want list, in case you're curious, is so.
1,4,10,55,126,181,182,197,209,226,245,250,251,263,268,270,300,301,317,331,
339,340,359,363,398,402,420,480,492,523,530,540,575,582,597
A couple of Hank Aaron specials at the beginning (1 and 4), Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and a few other stars are on the list, but I should be able to chop away at it and hopefully be done by labor day.
Then we start on the next batch of sets. Nothing easy for this guy.
Enjoy the hobby!!

Let's Face it, there's a race to the finish line
In my extreme haste to get last night's post onto the blogosphere, I forgot to title it. I've done that once or twice before, but usually catch the mistake before I actually hit publish. Not yesterday, so my clumsiness was out there for the whole world to see for about 24 hours.
I'd love it if blogger actually gave you an error message, sort of like sending an email with no subject line. Something like, hey dumbass you forgot the title, are you sure you want to publish this mess?
Ok, fun over. Kind of continuing last nights theme and making a quick post about another of my 10 sets that is closing in on completion, 2013-14 O-pee-Chee hockey.
The final 2 base cards on the bottom row came today via a small Sportlots order, and the other 6 above have arrived in the past couple of weeks. This set is down to just 10 to go, nothing major price wise, but a pair of RCs will cost about $4-$5 apiece. I'll probably wait a week or 2 and then go hunting and see if I can finish the set in one shot.
Not only is this set close to being done, 1978 Topps baseball is just about done and 1976 Topps is down to just a single card. It is a race to the finish line.
As you can see I capitalized "Face" in the post title to celebrate another '59 Topps card coming in the house, that of Roy Face from the Pirates. I decided to include a card from 1959 because this is my 1959th post on the blog. I'm going to try and post one card from a set that matches my post # until I hit 2000, which at the rate I'm posting should come in mid to late August.
2000 posts means cake in this house. I can't wait....

Going my own way
If there's been one good thing that has happened during the COVID-19 pandemic/lockdown/work from home period that has been the last 2 months is that my card collecting process has finally evolved to what it probably should have been a couple of years ago.
I've kind of gotten sick of pack ripping. Sick of hunting for packs on big box store shelves, only to find them picked over and searched by assholes (yea, I used that word...apologies to those who are offended).
I went to Target Saturday morning, first time in almost a month. Nothing has changed when it comes to visiting the store; I go and find the items I need, and then hit the card aisle last before checking out. What I saw was kind of pitiful.
I end up having to buy a bunch of SPs at the end, usually leaving me frustrated (or pissed, you choose the word you prefer) when I need a bunch of them and hate having to pay prices I don't want to pay.
It may sound like a backward way of thinking, but I kind of wish I had started with the more expensive cards from a vintage baseball set such as '59 Topps, because I spent a lot of time building up "numbers" of cards, and now have hit pretty much a screeching halt because I have nothing but high dollar cards left to go.
But that's all water under the bridge. Saving money on packs right now is helping me focus more on trying to complete a boatload of sets I've been working on, and I go back to the immense joy I had when I finished my '64 Topps set, and I'm looking to get more of that in the coming weeks and months.
Venting over. I'm going my own way...come along if you wish.
Enjoy the hobby and stay safe!!

- All the clamor that has been Bowman over the past couple of weeks, no sign of it at all.
- It barely looked touched/restocked. If it had been restocked, all there was for jumbo packs was Heritage, MVP hockey, and a bit of GQ
- Blasters were minimal as well; the only one that I touched was 18-19 OPC hockey, and I put it down right away because I thought I could do better with that $20
It also made me think. I'm really happy with how my collection is progressing. I've been completing sets at a good rate so far in 2020, and I'm hoping to have 3 more completed in June when some orders arrive. I've also revisited a couple of sites that I slowed down on using for card shopping, one of them being Sportlots.
I hit up a reliable seller that I've used many times in the past for hockey card needs and decided to start picking up some OPC short prints for a pair of sets I'm working on.
Clint (Sportlots ID: ctcdork) has a great selection of cards at reasonable prices. I decided to grab a bunch of SPs, starting with the 8 above from the 2009-10 OPC set. My thought process has changed a bit on building these "older" OPC sets, I'm actually going after chunks of the SPs first before finishing up with the base cards. I still need 313 cards for this set, but only 37 of them are SPs, and I'll probably keep buying them up before chasing more trades to finish up the set.
Because when I do it the other way, like I did with 2013-14 OPC...

Attack Mode
Apparently attack mode is what I'm in right now, as I've done nothing but focus on my set building the past few weeks.
Even my big box weakness, Target, has been out of my radar the past 2 weeks. Maybe working from home has some advantages, as the only place I've gone in my car is to the grocery store. Saved a lot of money during the week too, as I've not had to stop on the way to work to grab something to eat (a bad vice) or fill the car with gas, which I would have had to do twice so far this month.
That money has been put to cardboard pursuits, including a small order from a couple of sellers on Sportlots this week.
This small 4 card purchase is from seller 1stGOAL1, who helped me knock down my want list for 2013-14 OPC hockey.
Interesting little side bit, my wife comes in and asks me while I'm writing this post what I received today. I show her the 4 cards and her first comment is "I've never heard of any of them". The next couple of minutes we have a brief discussion how card companies can produce a card of a player as long as he's played at least one game in the NHL, and how David Ayres (EBUG for the Hurricanes this year) will likely have a popular RC in next year's OPC set.
I decided after that discussion to look up how many games each of these 4 played in the league.
Damien Brunner 132 games
Nicklas Jensen 31 games
Victor Bartley 121 games
Sean Collins 31 games
More than I thought, especially for Brunner and Bartley, but still nothing really earth shattering career wise. All 4 have been out of the NHL for better than 4 years.
This set is down to 24 cards on the want list, with a few more on their way from another Sportlots seller.
It appears that the virus has changed my card collecting focus, probably for the good as I can honestly say I've never been this focused on putting sets to bed in all the time that I've been a blogger.

2020 is upon us. Time to finish some sets.
Happy New Year to everyone! I do hope that you had an enjoyable evening celebrating the ringing in of a new decade.
For me, collecting in 2019 was quite enjoyable, and successful. I completed a few sets, and I also wound up with 154 transactions on the TCDB website (which becomes www.tcdb.com as of today so update your bookmarks), far better than I ever expected to accomplish this past year.
What I want to do this year is pretty simple. Complete 10 sets. Easy right? All 10 sets that I'm going to discuss have want lists of 100 cards or less, 8 of which are under 30. How I'm going to do it will be a little bit of a challenge, because why would I make it easy on myself?
OK, so here goes. Here are the 10 sets that I will finish this year, in order of completion.
This was one of 4 cards from the '83 Topps set that I received in a recent trade package (thank you Jason!) that took 3 weeks to travel from Wisconsin to Florida via the USPS. Dog sled, no doubt. My '83 build is down to 26 cards, with 2 of them being the Gwynn and Sandberg RCs. I bought the Steve Carlton base card on COMC yesterday, so this set is currently in progress. Once this is complete, next up is..

1981 Topps
Robin Yount is my first scan of the 20's, and finishing this set is fait accompli. I mentioned recently that I only needed Mark Wagner to finish this set, and I received a message shortly there after from Bruno in the Great White North (thank you Bruno!) that he was willing to send me the card in a trade, so this is done.
1982 Topps
As part of that same trade, Bruno is sending me 5 of the remaining 15 cards that I need to finish the '82 Topps set. That left me with 10, so I hopped on COMC and picked those up. So, this set is done and is either in transit, or will be in transit in a couple of days. Which brings us to...

1979 Topps

| Evidence as to why Mario had trouble hitting over 200. Donuts on the bat make it tougher to hit the ball |
This is where a bit of the fun begins. I have 24 cards left to go to finish this set. The Ozzie Smith RC will be the one that costs the most, but there's also Nolan Ryan and a host of other star cards to pick up, so I'll be hunting to try and find them as cheap as possible, like usual. A bit of a hurdle, so after this is done I'll drop down a bit and make things easier for myself again with...
2012-13 O-Pee-Chee
This set will be one that I'll be glad to have out of the way. I've stalled on it for way too long, and with only 6 SPs left to go, getting this completed will bring a bit of a sigh of relief. Brandon Manning and his $5 SP (why???) be damned, I'll finish this one in the first half of 2020 finally. Then I'll move on to...
1976 Topps
This set completion may not be as daunting as I thought. 20 cards remaining including a George Brett 2nd year card, Ellis Valentine and Ron Guidry RCs along with 4 All Star cards and a few other big names will make it a challenge on the wallet, but it's what I signed up for with this set so I'm looking forward to working on this roughly around the start of baseball season in late March. After this is done, I'll finally finish...
1973 Topps
Yes, I've been down to 2 cards left to go for about 2 years now. Mike Schmidt RC and the high number series checklist. The stalling will end this year. I promise. Once this is done, we'll move back to hockey and finish...
2013-14 O-Pee-Chee
27 cards left to finish this up, 2 from the base set (Andrei Sekera and Taylor Hall) and 25 SPs. This situation actually improved while writing this post, as I had the Vladimir Tarasenko RC on my want list, which I was pretty sure I had. Checked the box and sure enough, there it is, so that dropped the want list by one. When this is done, I've got two want lists that are a bit bigger, so we'll start with the more recent...
1978 Topps
Still a bit of work to do on this one, with 79 cards to go. The Molitor/Trammell RC and the Dale Murphy RC are the two big starters on finishing this one, but there's quite a few commons that should help to knock the list down to a more manageable number quickly. Once those are in hand, several big names such as Rose and Ryan will cost a few bucks. I also need 11 team checklist and 2 manager cards, which I thought was interesting (Night Owl, do you have a Tommy Lasorda dupe from this set?). Once this is done, the 10th and final set from this list is...
1974 Topps
92 cards remaining to finish this set. Let's start with Dave Parker and Dave Winfield RCs. 4 Hank Aaron Special cards at the beginning of the set. A Ryan/Seaver combo card. Ryan, Bench, Stargell and Rose cards. This will take a bit of time to finish up. But I believe with the other 9 sets above completed and distractions to a minimum (hopefully), I can knock this out in a reasonable amount of time.
There you have it. 10 sets that I'm going to finish in 2020. The only other thing that I can promise is that will not rip any 1/1 cards in half.
Enjoy the hobby!

Stalling?
The biggest order I've made on COMC came with just 5 cards from 2 OPC sets that I've been working on for quite a while.
These 2 12-13 OPC cards bring this list down to just 6. Why in the hell didn't I just buy the other 6? I don't know what it is about refusing to over pay for some of these SPs. Maybe I shouldn't be putting these sets together if I flat out keep stalling to finish them up when I'm so close.
2013-14 OPC is a little further out, 30 cards remaining. Now there are 3 cards that are worth a few bucks that I still need, names such as Tarasenko, Gallagher and Marchessault. Those I can live with waiting for a bit to purchase. Dougie Hamilton and Alex Galchenyuk are needs also. Most of the other names are guys that have had their cup of coffee and are on to doing other things, or are 3rd/4th liners in the NHL. But my stinginess prevents me from ponying up the $$ to get these sets out of the way.
Maybe it's time to make a plan in 2020 to finish up a bunch of sets. Sometimes just sitting and writing posts gives me ideas for the weeks/months to come.
2019's lead off post turned out to be a success for me because it was simple, two goals, both of which were completed easily (150 trades!). I didn't stall on working on both of those goals.
2020 will be a year of clear vision. More on that next year. No stalling either.
Thanks for reading!

When last we met...
It's been a while, almost two months since I've posted anything on the blog. Haven't had the urge to write to be honest. Extra time to sit down and come up with something has also been at a premium.
But since it's thanksgiving morning (Happy Thanksgiving to all in the US!) and I've nothing to do until football starts in about 4 hours, I figured I'd sit down and update a post from the beginning of July.
I'd posted 8 sets on the blog that I thought I had a chance of finishing (at various levels of confidence). Here's how I'm doing in that regard...
1. 95-96 Collector's Choice Players Club hockey. This was finished about 2 weeks after the original post. The final cards can be seen in this post.
2. 1976-77 OPC hockey. Original post stated I had 9 cards remaining.
I found the Bobby Orr you see above for cheap, and a few weeks later I snagged the Ken Dryden on ebay during a 10% ebay bucks promotion. The final 4 cards, including the Tiger Williams RC, are in my COMC cart, so this one is done.
3. 1989 Upper Deck baseball. Original post stated I had 25 cards left to obtain.
I traded for this Randy Johnson RC recently on the TCDB website, and that left me with just 2 cards on the want list. Ken Griffey Jr. and Omar Vizquel. I'll see if I can find something cheap this weekend and put this one to bed as well.
4. 2012-13 OPC hockey. Original post stated I had 18 cards left to go.
This Pelle Lindbergh SP was part of a recent Sportlots order that brought my want list down to 8, with 2 of those in my current COMC cart. Black Friday weekend is here, hopefully I can get the last 6 bought and have this one done also.
5. 1976 Topps Baseball. Original post boasted a want list of 47 cards.
Found this Willie Randolph RC in a box of cards I was about to add onto the TCDB trade list, and I've been whittling away at this want list here and there on COMC.
The want list is down to 21 cards, but with Hank Aaron and Nolan Ryan on the list, I don't think this will get done in 2019. 2020 for sure...
6. 2013-14 OPC hockey. The original post had this at 36 cards left...
This Calvin Pickard RC was one of 2 cards I bought on the same Sportlots order as the Pelle Lindbergh above. My absolute stubbornness (read cheapness) sees the ridiculous prices on some of the SPs, and the want list is still at 28 cards to go. This isn't happening in 2019 unless a minor miracle happens.
7. 1981 Topps baseball. 185 cards left on this want list back in July
I'm as happy as Hector Cruz to say that the 185 card want list has all but vanished. 2 of the 3 cards I need are in my COMC cart, the only one on the want list left is #358 Mark Wagner.
Done.
8. 1973 Topps baseball. 2 cards on the want list back in July. Mike Schmidt RC and the high series checklist.
Status quo.
With those out of the way, I've made some strides on some other sets over the past few months, such as '79 Topps (29 left to go and 3 in the COMC cart);
1983 Topps has just 93 cards to go (I believe the list was over 300 to go in July)
And I've added another want list page for a couple of parallel sets I've been chipping away at, one of them being 2008 Upper Deck X die cut
And the 2019 Gypsy Queen green parallel set is also there; I've passed the 50% mark on that quest.
So, even though I haven't been writing, there's still lots going on with my collection.
If you're on TCDB, my trade list and want list are under my ID rmitchell6700. I hit the 140 trade mark for 2019 this week, got a shot at 150 by year's end...

The push to complete sets is now on
We're already halfway through 2019, and I've had a pretty good year trade wise. I'm over 70 completed trades so far, so the goal of 100 trades by the end of the year should not be a problem.
My goal of 5 complete sets will easily be knocked out as well, as I'm very close on a few of them. But I decided to write a countdown post largely for my own benefit (I know that there are many out there who don't care for these types of posts). I'm hoping that putting something in print will help me get my thoughts together on how to progress for the remainder of the year on my set building journey.
Here goes:
1. 1995-96 Collectors Choice Players Club Hockey
Cards remaining: 3
Confidence level: Very high
Comments: It's been a quarter of a century, time to put this to bed. If I don't finish this by the end of the year, it's time to turn in my collecting badge and move on to basket weaving.
2. 1976-77 OPC hockey
Cards remaining: 9
Confidence level: Medium High
Comments: A common theme through out this post will be my cheapness. I gave up hunting a few months ago for cheap copies of Ken Dryden, Bobby Orr and Tiger Williams, so sometime in the near future I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get this beauty of a set completed.
3. 1989 Upper Deck baseball
Cards remaining: 18
Confidence level: Medium High
Comments: A recent trade on the TCDB put a major dent in this set, dropping my want list from just over 100 cards to 18. Mostly the big name RCs are left; Griffey Jr., Smoltz, Biggio and Johnson. Again, just have to dig in and start adding them.
4. 2012-13 OPC hockey
Cards remaining: 18
Confidence level: High
Comments: There is nothing overly expensive preventing me from completing this set. Some of the cards on sites like COMC are just ridiculously priced, so I might turn to trading for them to get this done.
5. 1976 Topps baseball
Cards remaining: 47
Confidence level: Medium
Comments: You know, if I didn't have the 4 sets above that I wanted to finish, I'd probably be quite confident that I could get this done by the end of 2019. Even with the fact that 90% of the cards remaining for this set are stars.
6. 2013-14 OPC hockey
Cards remaining: 36
Confidence level: medium
Comments: Another set that has just some ridiculous prices on fringe rookies, mostly for the simple fact that they are SPs. My refusal to pay such stupid prices is the reason that this is below '76 Topps BB. Stubborn, yes I know I am, but sometimes you have to draw the line.
7. 1981 Topps baseball
Cards remaining: 185
Confidence level: medium
Comments: This set right now has the exact same number of cards left as the next set on the list (79T), but I rank this higher because I see so much more of this on trade lists than I do '79s. By the way, someone on twitter had a question recently asking about underrated players from the 1980s, my answer would be Carney Lansford.
8. 1979 Topps
Cards remaining: 185
Confidence level: Just below medium
Comments: I just don't see a whole lot of these up for trade, and buying lots of them on ebay aren't very feasible (too many doubles), so I'll be patient and see if I get lucky and find someone willing to part with a bunch of them on the cheap.
9. 1973 Topps
Cards remaining: 2
Confidence level: Lower than I can limbo
Comments: Approaching 2 years now at 2 cards to go. Mike Schmidt RC. High number checklist. Do I expect to find these 2 cards at a price I want to pay by years end? Hell no. Maybe it's time I just ignored everything else and went after this. My frugality will likely prevail and this will end up on 2020's list of sets to finish.
I had a lot of fun writing this post. I got a lot of my thoughts on these sets and current pricing out there for everyone to see. I'm not ashamed to admit I'm cheap, but as you can see from what I've written above, maybe it's time to just move forward and concentrate on finishing these sets.
We'll see what happens and revisit this post at the end of the year.....

4 in the door and 2 feet on the go
Well, there have been a couple of benefits of all these trades I've been completing over the past couple of months. A big part of 2019 for me on a personal note is trying to lose all this excess weight I've been carrying for years. My house is roughly a 10-15 minute walk to the Post Office, so weekend mornings have been spent gaining steps and some exercise while sending packages in the mail to trade partners all over N. America.
Here's the latest 4 trade packages to come in the door for your consideration.
I put this set up on the TCDB website a few weeks back on a lark, wondering if I would get any hits on it. Boy, have I been surprised so far. These 7 2008 UD X die-cuts came to me via TCDB user ID jrayes7of9. I sent a few Heritage SPs his way and these 7 cards get me to just shy of the 1/2way mark for this 100 card set.
This trade was a hot one, as Steven (TCDB ID: parsley24) offered up these 4 cards for 4 '18 A&G Minis featuring the hottest peppers in the world. The 2 A&G cards leave me with just 11 to go to finish the set, and the Cutch and Ichiro cards help those PCs out. I've added quite a few base cards to the want lists for most of my player collections, and I've received quite a few hits in the past couple of months.
I was also very happy with this trade with TCBD user ID suedehead6 (I gotta start remembering to write people's names down, once they close the trade I can't see their names anymore!!). I found it interesting that he collects both the New York Rangers and Kansas City Royals, but there's never any telling what people collect anymore just by geography. I sent him some cards from those teams, and got back some much needed hockey from a couple of OPC sets (12-13 & 13-14) along with another Joe Sakic base card that I didn't have.
Last but not least, this trade with Kevin, who has one of the best ID's on the site (kdinthejaw), sent me a nice chunk of 91-92 OPC Premier cards. I'm sure that he's probably had them sitting in a box for quite a long time and was happy to get them off of his hands. 91-92 OPC Premier was another want list that I put on the TCDB site on a lark, and sure enough I have received quite a few cards for the set, with 5 more on the way from Hawaii! Kevin also sent a Keith Tkachuk card and a couple of Joe Sakic cards for those player collections.
I started the effort to drop some weight at the end of January, about a month before I saw my doctor for my annual physical. A lot of this stemmed from being tired all the time (especially on weekends), and not wanting to be round anymore (lol). Well, at the end of February I was weighed at the docs office at 284, and that same day I received a FitBit and vowed to start improving my health.
I'm down to 267 right now, and the best part for me is that it is noticeable. My goal by the end of 2019 is to weigh 210 lbs. I've also cut down on big meals, I don't eat as many sugary snacks (especially in the evenings), and my goal is 35 active minutes a day. I'm not starving myself or going on one of those fad diets, just eating less and walking more is helping me tremendously.
So keep those trades coming, the walks to the post office do nothing but help me out!!

A Mish Mash
Mish Mash is exactly what you could call the scattering of cards in this post. 70's, 80's and 2010's are all represented in this post. Commons, semistars, stars, they're all here as well. This is all the hockey I had originally planned to show last night, along with a quartet of cards I won off of ebay that arrived today.
All alone from the 2013-14 OPC set was this Vladimir Tarasenko RC, which I figured I better grab now before the price starts to climb. Vlad reached the 30 goal plateau again this season, and picking this up for just under $3 was an easy decision. Still 40 more cards to finish this set, the majority of them SPs.
This page of cards from the 2012-13 OPC set weren't as expensive as the Tarasenko above, largely because there's not as much star power here. OK, maybe Mario is a star, but it's not his RC I have here (someday I'll have it though). This set is a bit closer to completion, just 21 cards away. All but one of those is a SP.
Forget the checklist, the other 5 cards from the 83-84 OPC set weren't your pennies on the dollar purchases. I still did pretty well though, the Messier/Gretzky card was just $7, and the others were in the $1.50-$4 range. 3 cards left to finish this set, Tony O, Francis, and another Gretzky card are all that's left to finish this beauty.
How about some mid to late 70's cards? 3 more off of the 76-77 OPC set on the top row, leaving me with just 9 cards to go. Love the Bill McKenzie card, not sure how the proof readers missed the spelling of his name on the front.
Bottom row is the start of a couple of sets; the Denis Potvin and Atlanta Flames team card are from the 77-78 OPC set and both cost me right around 50 cents. Someday I'll find a nice starter lot on the cheap to get me going with that set. I'm also looking forward to building one of the more unique sets from the 70's, the blue bordered 79-80 set. Gretzky's RC is in that one, so maybe one day when my house is paid off I'll use a mortgage payment to buy one of those.
Yep, we're all over the map here, as these 3 2018-19 OPC retro cards found their way here. I love that OPC included the team checklist/logo cards as I've always been a big fan of those.
I love the 71-72 OPC set even more each time new copies come home. These were all within the $1 to $1.50 range, which I've come to realize is pretty reasonable. I'm still not venturing into the star range as far as this set goes, but I did get a nice group of 4 cards from this set off ebay this week;
Using the "PERFECT3" code that ebay offered this week, this lot of 4 cards cost me just over $7 shipped. The Henri Richard card alone is worth that and more, so this lot was a steal as far as I'm concerned. Still a long way from completion, although the 1/3 mark is not too far off now as I'm at 79/264 in hand. Can't wait to have this set in a binder!!
Hope you enjoyed the Mish Mash. It's kind of what I do.
