When looking over the cards I have already for each of these two sets, for some reason I decided to show off a card from teams that no longer play in their respective cities. Seattle of course has a team now, and I'm still surprised by the rumors that Tampa Bay could end up moving to Montreal. This is another match that intrigues me; I'm very curious to see how the votes will play out.
Tale of the tape:
- Set Size: 1976 has 660 cards. 1970 has 720 cards
- Key RCs: 1976 Dennis Eckersley, Ron Guidry 1970 Thurman Munson, Darrell Evans
- Cost of complete set in NM condition: 1976 $250 1970 $2000
- Number of cards with high book at $100 or more: 1976: 0 1970: 2
Both blogs that I have linked are written by veteran writers. 1976's is courtesy of Matthew R, while Jim from Downingtown makes another appearance with his '70 Topps blog.
Tough choice, and not because I like them both. But looking through my Orioles teams sets from both seasons has me favoring the 1976. Put me down for a wishy-washy vote for '76 Topps.
ReplyDeleteI'd go with '76 Topps. I don't like '70 Topps much at all. The gray borders bore me.
ReplyDeleteBright colors vs. grey. Hmmm. Think I'll actually vote for 70
ReplyDeleteGotta be 76 Topps.
ReplyDelete70 is one of Topps's ugliest ever.
1970.
ReplyDeleteThe set includes lots of new photos (as evidenced by the 100-year anniversary patch seen on many players' uniforms), and very few airbrushed cards. Also, the backs are very easy to read with the white backgrounds (as opposed to black text on a darker background).
I don't know why the gray borders draw so much criticism. It's better than the drab 1960s-basement-rumpus-room-wood-panelling look of the 1962 set.
1970 may be kinda drab, but it's got the Pilots, it's got the Miracle Mets World Series cards, I really like 1970.
ReplyDelete...But I looooooooove 1976 Topps for purely subjective reasons... It's the third set I collected, and the third set I completed (or thought I had until this year).
I gotta go with 1976.
I think my vote this time goes for the 1970 set. I don't have much of that year, and I think they are mostly/all of the Pilots. I like the gray border, it's definitely unique for the Topps sets, although it is not the best visual that they have produced.
ReplyDeleteI'll vote 1976. I like 1970 and all, but it's just a little boring.
ReplyDeleteGonna go with '76. Not a big fan of '70 because of the drab gray.
ReplyDelete1976. I like it because it has the sporting news all time all stars.
ReplyDeleteNormally I'd go with 1970 because I collected them as a kid but 1976 looks much better.
ReplyDelete1976 for me.
ReplyDelete1970 is the year I was born, but going to go with 1976 based on the better design.
ReplyDeleteI like the 76 set much better than the 70 set. I started collecting in 71, and I have never had any interest in getting much of anything from the 70 set. I think the only thing I own from 70 is my Tigers team collection.
ReplyDeleteI am with Commishbob. This is a very meh match-up. I will go with 1976 simply because it is my birth year set.
ReplyDeleteYeah, not a big fan of either. I guess I'd go with '76.
ReplyDelete'76 is the 2nd set I ever collected. Me and my best friend Mario in the back of the room trying to keep the teacher from spying our stacks of '76 Topps.
ReplyDelete1976 in a beat down of boring-ass 1970 (although it DOES have the Pilots).
I thought when I came to this post that I might make a sympathy vote for '70, but I'm surprised to see that it's actually getting some love. So I'll play it straight. Abso-friggin'-lutely '76. The '72 and '75 sets get all of the '70s color-lovin' pub, but '76 gives you a taste of theat, along with a classically clean design, those sweet position icons, and a large dominant photo area. Plus the sweet traded cards with the newspaper headlines, the All-Time All-Stars, AND a Father & Son subset. Oh, and Hank Aaron's sunset card(s). Yup, '76. Hands down.
ReplyDeleteboth are kinda blah to me, but ill go with the 76 set in this battle..
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna go with70,.. It's the set I'm working on now.
