Another New Year's goal is complete, and boy am I a glutton for punishment

I'm closing in on 7 full years of blogging, and most of that has been spent accumulating Blue Jays.  Lots of them.  It's kind of slowed down in recent months, but for the longest time I was getting the cards in, noting them in a spreadsheet, and putting them in boxes.

No order whatsoever.   What a mistake.

As the spreadsheet grew and grew, and the collection passed the 6000 card mark, I started realizing a few things.

  • I couldn't find any particular card quickly.  With multiple boxes of cards (one of them a 5 row monster), hunting became a chore
  • I started finding duplicate entries on the spreadsheet.  Quite a few of them as a matter of fact.
  • I needed a better way of doing things.  I've known this since the beginning of 2017, but hadn't taken action.
So over the past few weeks, I've taken every spare moment I could find and tackled this project.  I sorted cards first by decade, then by year, then by manufacturer, and finally by set.  I entered them all into the Trading Card Database and now I have just under 6200 cards sorted.

Now, I can find things.   Now, I can file new stuff that comes into the collection a lot quicker.  It feels damn good.

It actually got to the point a few weeks ago where I just wanted to light a match and set fire to the whole thing.  As you can see, that didn't happen.

It's nice to have this done.  Plain and simple.  Now I can devote my free time to writing instead of sorting.

Now if I can only think of something to write about....

Thanks for reading, Robert

  1. Wow! That looks so neat and tidy! I'm envious, great job dude.

Where did you get those 'spacers'? What is the actual name for those things?

    1. I bought them off of Amazon, Trading Card Dividers they are called. I bought 100 of them for $11, 2 day shipping didn't hurt as well.

  2. I did something similar before eventually transitioning to binders. Pro tip: don't have butter fingers like me. After having a stack slip out of my hands 5 or 6 times and having to re-order all the cards, I gave up and switched to binders. Love the year dividers!

    1. You know Mark, I slowly started putting some of the card into the binders and then I realized with all the sets I'm putting together that will need to go in binders, I was going to have a space problem.

Butter Fingers?? You better believe I have those.

  3. Congrats on finally getting your collecting life in order. Although for me personally, this is an excellent reason why I have a very strict limit on the cards I choose to keep around as I always trim my collection periodically to make sure it stays in the 300-350 range (this excludes my player collections).

    1. 300-350? I'd say that most collectors would envy your ability to keep your collection that small. I could never do that...

    1. How bad do you want to get there AJ?

I'm just thankful that my better half let me use the dining room table for several days/weekends to get this accomplished.

  6. Looks great! I've been thinking of experimenting with the Trading Card Database for my mini-collections ever since Zistle went kaput.

    1. There are a lot of bloggers that use TCDB, and many have made quite a few trades on there (I've only made 2 so far). I love the site.

  7. Nicely done. Glad you didn't set your cards on fire. I've not listed any of my collections on a spreadsheet or TCDB because I barely have time to keep them all organized - but perhaps I should. I was looking for a Kansas City card to add to my latest post and I couldnt find it anywhere. Definitely time to organize!

I used dividers years ago, but found I couldnt close the box with them in there. Yours look like the perfect size.

    1. I just bought the BCW style of dividers, they are only 4" tall. They work quite well...

  8. I NEED to do this with my team PC's. Last time I went to the wholesaler, I picked up a ton of dividers. Now I just NEED to sit down and sort.

    1. sitting down to start sorting was the HARDEST part to do. Took me over a year to get motivated enough to start this.

I added a couple of hundred more cards to the boxes after I wrote this post. Couldn't believe how easy it was to add them to the TCDB, and then just put them right where they belonged...in order.

      What a difference...

  9. Congrats on getting organized. It sounds like your collection used to be like mine is right now. I have tons of cards unorganized in boxes and in a few stacks and some in binders. I have talked about my lack of organization a few times on my blog: https://captkirk42.blogspot.com/search/label/organization
At times I think I am getting a little better, but still feel more like a hoarder since my move 10 years ago (well it will be 10 on 01 Aug this year).
