Dave Winfield is a catcher?

More goodies from the land of PWE, this time from regular contributor Pat who runs the Hot Corner Cards blog.  I've mentioned Pat so often on the blog lately that I believe I may have to start charging him an advertising fee.

OK, maybe the cards will cover the fees this time.

First off, the SNI set inches its way past the 75% mark with this Heritage Chrome beauty from 2013:

Bruuuuuuuuce
Jay's card is serial #642, and brings the Reds to 40 out of the 50 cards required for the insanity set.

Next up, a couple of cards from a set that is involved in the "What's Next" tourney, 1962 Topps.

I'm wondering if these Tigers are dupes...I hope so!

There's one more '62T card; that one I am showing on a quickie post tomorrow afternoon.

I've mentioned a time or 3 in the past that I enjoy art cards.   Vernon Wells on this card kind of dampers that enthusiasm just a bit...

VW just doesn't look happy, does he?

This next card probably was never listed as an error card, but for me it screams "screw up"!!

Backstop wins 1992 WS MVP Award.  Picture of Dave Winfield.  Hmmmm.

Just to be sure, I looked at baseballreference.com and checked Dave Winfield's stats.  All 3 outfield positions, a few games at first base, and a couple of innings at 3rd base in 1986.   Never played catcher.

Let's see if there's a mention of Dave on the back.

Nope.  I guess UD couldn't find a stock photo of Pat Borders anywhere?  Even #25 in the background isn't Borders (it's Devon White).

Makes you wonder how this slipped by the quality control department.  Maybe they were on break at the time...

Thank you for the cards Pat, much appreciated!!

Topps really did their homework on this card

For all the bashing that we do of Topps and the errors on cards and things of that nature, I found a card this past weekend while perusing through my many boxes of hockey cards, and was ready to pounce.  I take you back to the 2002-03 Topps Heritage hockey set, specifically card # 81 of Stu Barnes.

The TV set design will always be a classic

As you can plainly see on the card, he played on the Buffalo Sabres at the time.  If you look at the jersey however, you can see "N E W Y", the start of New York of course.

I was ready to jump on this one.  New York?  Yes, Buffalo is in New York, but they don't wear New York on the front of their jersey.

As has been proven many times, I was wrong.  Doing a little research of Google images, I came upon a post over at Third String Goalie which documents a game that was played between the Sabres and the New York Rangers in honor of the victims of the 9/11 attack.  It seems the Sabres wore these jerseys for that particular game, and both teams auctioned off their jersey for charity.

Just when I thought I had something....

11-12 Upper Deck Hockey series 2

Along with the 6 packs of Heritage I busted yesterday, I picked up a jumbo pack of 11-12 Upper Deck Hockey Series 2.  There were a few cards that caught my eye.

You may remember me posting a while back about the Pascal Dupuis error card in Series 1.  Upper Deck strikes again!!  This error was spotted quickly as well, however this time it wasn't the stats that were incorrect:

I've never spelled Upshall with a G

Somehow they confused Scottie Upshall with defenseman Jason Garrison.  Now if you look at the back of the card, you'll see that Scottie doesn't even have a beard, he's as baby-faced as they come:

No whiskers here

At least they got the back right.  It's not too often that I catch errors on cards, but for me to catch one on both series, you know that Upper Deck made some pretty bad mistakes.   Anyhow, onwards...

The Canvas parallels are back for series 2, and I pulled a Jacob Markstrom out of the pack:

I love the feel of these cards, reminds me a bit of the way the Masterpieces cards are textured.  Good Stuff.
I also pulled a couple of inserts as well...

The Brad Park Hockey Heroes card on the left was cool, I loved that they used a black and white photo from the 60's.  The card on the right is a Mika Zibanejad O-Pee-Chee card, #612.  I love the design, which mimics the 33-34 OPC V304A set.

I'm sure I'll be going after this set as well, I'll just end up mixing it in with all the other sets/projects I've got going on as well.   Keeps me out of trouble.
