Common card of the day: Bill Goldsworthy

1970-71 Topps # 46.  Poor Bill looks as if he's seen a ghost.  Another great addition to my collection from the weekend card show.

Sometimes good things come in threes

I had a plan heading into the weekend show.  The one main goal was to complete the 1977 Topps set, you know the one which I only required 9 cards to finish. 

I only managed to pickup 3 of them.  These 3 were cards that could have taken chunks out of my wallet, but thankfully didn't do too much damage.

A couple of solo cards of Hall of Famers, and a team photo with a few Hall of Famers in it as well.  These 3 cards cost me less than 5 bucks total, which is good enough for me.  Only six to go to complete the '77 set, including the Fidrych RC.

Now these next three cards would have been normally well down any card show list, but for some reason they caught my eye, and for $2 they made their way home with me.

Three Leafs cards from the 70-71 Topps set.  I rarely come across anything like this when I hit the monthly card show, but when I saw these I knew I had to have them.  The Gamble is creased quite a bit, and in essence was really a throw in.  The other two are in decent shape and all 3 will add to my Maple Leafs collection quite nicely.

Still a lot more to show off, I'll keep posting them over the next few days for you.

Chunks

I hit the monthly card show today, and after going almost two weeks without purchases anywhere in the online world, I had a bit of extra money to play with.

Well, after a couple of hours and $68 later, I brought home my goodies and was surprised at the amount of cards that I had.  It wasn't the massive pile that I had brought home from previous shows.

I then realized that I'm at the point in some of the sets that I'm building that the cards are going to get more expensive.  Gone are the 15, 20 and 25 cent commons, and we're on to the mid level star cards, high numbered short prints, record breaker cards, etc.  What these cards are going to take out of my wallet can be described as....

Chunks.

Necessities of course in the world of set completion, but yet they take a slightly bigger chunk out of the budget.

Nonetheless, I did pickup quite a few of these chunks today, which after sitting down and looking them over, pleased me because they are solid pieces for the sets that I'm working on.

One of the chunks was my buy of the day....$18, but for my '64 Topps set, a very nice piece indeed.

Card #260, Frank Robinson:

One of the best examples of this card I've seen so far, and I happily picked it up very quickly at that price. 

The one thing I get a kick out of in Robinson's photo is that a man with 586 career HR's is choking up on his bat.   I don't know if you'd call that a standard power hitters pose.

As I said, this was the biggest chunk from the show;  there are a lot of smaller chunks that I brought home today as well, which I will start showing off tomorrow for you.

Common card of the day: Martin Biron

It's amazing how a couple of trades can seem to magically transform a team, but Biron's Rangers seem to be somewhat rejuvenated by the addition of Clowe and the subtraction of Gaborik. 

I don't know about everyone out there, but I kind of like the design of this 2002-03 SP Authentic card, #9 in the set.  I'm sure there is still mixed feelings everywhere about the Buffalo jersey at that time however...
