It's contest time, because my wife told me to.

So Happy It's Thursday!!  Hope you're all getting ready for a great weekend.  Yes, you read the title right, it's time for the contest because my wife told me to.  I'm sure most of you read my little cryptic post last week, announcing the contest.  Well, I was kind of stuck on what to make everyone do in order to enter (you didn't think I was going to make it easy, did you??)

As I sat at my computer the other night pondering what to do, my wife saw my pensive look and asked me what was the matter.  I told her that I was struggling to figure out what to do about the contest.  She looked at me and said, "you haven't done your contest yet?  you hit 50 followers last week, quit being a slug and get on it".

LOL....so here goes, the contest is naturally open to anyone who reads the blog.   NO PIMPAGE REQUIRED.  (although of course I will be sure to pass along a thank you to anyone who does)  Now I know of at least one other contest going on over at Play at the Plate, so I'll leave this one open for a few days.  I'm also going to use this contest to steal some ideas from you guys & gals.  Here's what I want:

I want you to tell me your favorite sports moment, and why.  It can be from any of the four major sports (Baseball, Football, Hockey, Basketball), and your description should include at least one card that reminds you of the event.
I'll start off to give you an idea of what I'm looking for:

My favorite sports moment was Joe Carter's game winning home run in the 93 World Series against the Phillies.  As a Jays fan, it was the crowning moment on 2 years of great times for the Jays, and the Skydome literally went nuts when the ball went over the wall.  I actually screamed out loud at the TV when he hit it, and I'll never forget the moment.  The card I will use to illustrate the HR is 1994 Score card # 625.

Touch em all Joe!!  you'll never hit a bigger HR in your life

Now of course you will not be able to scan cards into the comment section, but if you just list the year, card # and player, that will suffice.

The card doesn't have to depict the actual moment like this one does, just a card that reminds you of the player/event that you describe will suffice.

I don't have a clue what I will have for the winner, but I will likely detail the winnings towards what the collector wishes (cards/packs/ or combo of both).  Naturally, the winner will be determined by random selection off of random.org, just as everyone else does.  I will give everyone until Tuesday, November 8th at 1159 EST to post your entry.  I look forward to your responses.

Thank you for reading, Robert

  1. My favorite (or maybe least favorite?) sports moment: 2009 World Series game 4 when Damon pulled off the double stolen base, commemorated on card number AGHS6, from the 2010 Allen & Ginter's. You can read about the rest here: http://dawgbonesaphilliesphan.blogspot.com/2011/02/crinkly-follow-up.html and also see a scan of the card.

  2. My favorite moment? The Steelers winning the Super Bowl against the Seahawks. I'd been a Steelers fan my entire life, and finally saw them win as a grown man. It's one of the few times I cried watching a game.

My favorite card at the time was my Ben Roethlisberger on-card Press Pass RC auto /100 with red ink. I loved that card but later had to sell it due to a tough financial situation as a young man with a growing family.

Oh, and I'm promoting this contest just because you used the word 'pimpage'. That's how it should be done.

  3. There are a bunch of great ones popping into my mind, but the one that I'll go with is John Elway's helicopter dive in the red zone against the Packers in SuperBowl XXXII. His rookie card (1984 Topps #63) would be the card that I thought of. I'm gonna need to get that card someday.

  4. I think my favorite moment would have to be the night Cal broke "the Streak". It was such a great moment in sports history and really cemented Cal as my #1 collecting interest. I know there are several cards commemorating that occasion that I have.

  5. I'm not sure if it's my favorite, but it's the moment I remember most in my mind, and that's the earthquake during the World Series. I was home alone, at 11 years old. We had earthquake drills in school all the time, so I knew what to do, but I was pretty scared afterwards. My mom was just leaving work (it was 5pm, after all), but wouldn't be home for 90 minutes due to traffic from the power being out. Score made a card in their 1990 set to commemorate the event. ("Lights Out Candlestick", #701)

My favorite moment would be Sid Bream rounding third and scoring in the 1992 NLCS against the Pirates. I was listening to the game on the radio (I should have been asleep), and got up to watch it on TV when it happened. It was purely amazing. Any Sid Bream card reminds me of this, though when I think of Sid Bream cards, I tend to only think of his 2005 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites card in the 1992 design (#31).

  6. Oh, my favorite moment is when the Angels won the World Series in their first time there in 2002. I watched, and scored, all the games on TV from where I live in Texas as I wasn't able to get back to California at the time. One of my sisters was visiting though, so that was nice. Several other of my family members went to a couple games in Anaheim, my brother was at game 7 when they won it all.

Anyhow, my favorite card of that moment is the 2003 Topps card #267 showing Mike Scioscia holding the trophy and grinning from ear to ear.

  7. Hmmm... I can't believe my mind is drawing a blank. I've thought about 15 to 20 key sports events in my lifetime, but none seem to be worthy of my "favorite sports moment".

Game 6 of this year's World Series? That was awesome, but I'm not a Cardinals fan. The Packers beating the Steelers and Rodgers finally rising out of Favre's shadow? It's pretty close... but no cigar.

When the San Jose Sharks finally win the Stanley Cup, that will definitely be my favorite sports moment... but until then... I'll go with the 1989 World Series.

I've been an A's fan longer than any other professional sports team and I grew up hating the San Francisco Giants. So when the two teams met in the Bay Bridge Series, I knew it was going to be exciting. Add in the drama of the Loma Prieta Earthquake... and the fact that the A's swept the Giants... and you have my current favorite sports moment... that is until the Sharks drink out of Lord Stanley's Cup.

  8. Favorite moment, easily:

    "I don't believe ... what I just saw."

Oct. 15, 1988. Kirk Gibson's HR off of Dennis Eckersley. I watched the first part of the game at one house, gave up the game, went to another house, turned on the game I don't know why, and the rest is history.

There are many cards showing Gibby's homer. I'll pick 2007 Upper Deck Masterpieces #6.

  9. My least favorite is Night Owl's most favorite, but I digress.

My favorite moment was the Giants World Series victory last year. As a lifelong Giants fan, I really wasn't sure it was going to happen during my lifetime which made it even more exciting. The card that most reminds me of it was the Series 2 Topps card this year, #552, especially the Diamond Version - what a sweet card.

  10. easy for me too.. my favorite was a game i was at: dodgers battling padres for first place 9/18/06. we hit 4 consecutive HR's (kent, drew, martin, anderson)in the bottom of the 9th to tie a game we had to keep battling back cuz the friggin padres wouldnt die. the pads went ahead in the 10th and then nomar blasted a 2 run walk-off HR to win it all !! dodger stadium went absolutely bezerko !! best game ever. card: UD nomar #345.

  11. Hi Robert -- It was the end of Super Bowl 34, where Mike Jones made the perfect wrap-up tackle on Kevin Dyson as Dyson extended his arm to try to get the TD (and tie the game), but came up a yard short.

  12. My favorite moment has to be watching the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004. Do I really need to go into detail why? I'm sure anyone who's a Red Sox fan can figure that one out! lol

My favorite card would be a whole set of cards reflecting this. The Upper Deck commemorative set that came out showing the Red Sox run through the playoffs and the World Series is really awesome. If I could, I would scan them all.

  13. The Rangers actually winning a game in the World Series last year. There is a 2011 Heritage card showing Mitch Moreland go deep and it says Rangers Retaliate.

  14. The 1996 World Series, the first time the Yankees won the WS in my memory. I still get goosebumps when they replay the end of the game. I used to have the Sports Illustrated commemorating that game, and in the short lived SI baseball card set they made a card with that cover image.

  17. There are a lot of them, but I'll pick this one because a) I was there in person and b) I just found it on youtube.

Dec 30, 1989, I was at Maple Leaf Gardens with my uncle, who had managed to get a pair of tickets. It looked like a real dud of a game as the Leafs were down 6-1 to Boston in the second and an entire row of Bruins fans in front of me was more than a little obnoxious about it.

The Leafs then proceeded to roar back with six in a row, with Wendel Clark scoring the OT winner. That row of Boston fans got quieter, and quieter, and quieter...

There isn't really a card of it, but the picture in the Yanic Perrault RC (in which he wears #7) was taken the following night in a New Year's Eve exhibition against one of the travelling Russian teams (Khimik, maybe?)

  18. I think in my haste I forgot to put in the stupid word verification.

My memory is "the slide" from the 1995 NLCS. Braves fans know what I'm talking about. Braves down 2-1 to the Pirates in game 7. 2 outs. David Justice on 3rd. Sid bream on 2nd. Francisco Cabrera at bat. Justice comes around and scores. Bream comes around and narrowly slides under the tag of Pirates catch Mike LaValliere. Awesome moment I remember watching unfold before my eyes courtesy of TBS.

1995 Upper Deck Collector's Choice captured this play on cardboard beautifully. Sadly, I don't own this card...but one day I will!

  19. The Ducks winning the Cup in 2007, as it's the only championship from one of my favorite teams in my lifetime (# 1 teams, a few of my secondary teams have won it all).

Though I don't own the card, this Ryan Getzlaf card commemorates the moment, and it's my favorite player as well, so it's extra awesome. I'd love to one day own it.

  20. My favorite moment is watching Mike Scott no-hit the Giants in 1986 to clinch the NL West. I was at the game, and then my parents taped the re-run of the game when we got home. Great game. Although I can't find a card that captures that moment, how about one with my two favorite players from my childhood:

  21. Super Bowl 42 - the Giants taking down Tom Brady and the undefeated Patriots. As it got near the end, all of my friends and I were starting to accept the inevitable. On a 3rd down play, it looked like Eli Manning was going to be sacked by a couple of Pats, but he somehow got out of it. We all screamed out of excitement when we saw that he escaped and desperately launched the ball in the air...and absolutely erupted when David Tyree came down with it. We were so excited that we had no idea that he caught it against his helmet until we saw all the replays. A few minutes later, the Giants were Super Bowl champs.

The Manning escape often gets overlooked, so this card did a great job to capture both parts of the play: http://www.checkoutmycards.com/Cards/Football/2008/UD_Masterpieces/3/David_Tyree_Eli_Manning/4308256

But this is my favourite, for not only the Braves winning, going from Worst to First, but for the call of the play, from the best baseball broadcaster ever, and the reason I became a Braves fan in the first place, Skip Caray.

  23. Greetings...Don't think it's my favorite sports moment, but it's definitely the one that stands out. It was July 7, 1987, Cubs vs. Padres, and newest Cub Andre Dawson gets hit in the face by Eric Show. To a 10 year old who was just getting into baseball, the sight of my favorite player on the ground was terrifying, to say the least. I've never seen anything like that before. What makes this stand out is what happened next...Rick Sutcliffe leading a charge to get Show, the big meelee that ensued, the umps having to get Show off the field, The Hawk getting up and then charging the Padres' dougout to find Show too, Greg Maddux getting tossed the next inning for hitting Benito Santiago. Older me would find this borderline silliness, but 10 year old me was all for it. My player gets hurt and the team goes into battle for him (I guess that qualifies as a favorite sports moment). It cemented my Cub fandom, and yes, because of the 1987 campaign, Dawson is my favorite Cub of all time.

Oh yes, a card. There's no card to document this, but Andre's 1988 Topps card #500 shows him connecting on a pitch. Good enough for me.

  24. Mine still has to be the Buckner miss in the 86 series. It's memorable for more than just the obvious. My dad (not a sports fan) made me and my brother go to bed while the Red Sox were still ahead. My brother was a huge Sox guy and was giving me crap before we fell asleep. Then my mom came in and told us what happened. I got the last word on that one! The card I like to illustrate this is 1990 Upper Deck #252. Note the tube right between Buckner's legs. Hehehehe!

  25. not the greatest moment ever, but my favorite moment was when Matt Stairs hit the home run off Jonathan Broxton in game 4 of the 2008 NLCS. It was at that moment I knew that the Phillies were going to be going to the World Series for the first time in 15 years. 2009 Topps, #139

  26. see this contest. Glad I did. My favorite sports moment is a college basketball game I was at: the Syracuse vs UCONN 6 OT game. I have a Jonny Flynn RC that reminds me of this game.
