On this date: June 14, 1975

  • Tom Griffin would pitch a 3 hit shutout as the Astros beat the Cardinals 9-0
  • This would be Griffin's 3rd, and last win of the season.  Tom would only make two more starts in 1975 before being shut down for the rest of the season.
  • Big Cliff Johnson would go 2 for 5 in the game with a homer and 4 RBI's.
  • This is Johnson's RC, and is located right beneath Steve Garvey's card in my binder.
  • Elsewhere, Johnny Bench would go 5 for 5 and drive in a run as the Reds beat the Cubs 11-3.
  • Interesting thought about the Reds batting order that day:  George Foster actually batted 8th that day.  All those years of big power and average numbers and I could never have imagined that he'd be batting before the pitcher....ever.

  • Wayne Twitchell was the big man for the Phillies on this day, going 3 for 3 at the plate with 2 singles, a double, a run scored and a RBI to help the Phillies to an 11-0 whitewash of the Padres.
  • Oh yeah, he pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only 5 hits and a walk while striking out 8.
  • Meanwhile, Boots Day hits a 2 out, 2 run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Expos ahead for good, as they beat the Giants 7-6 at Parc Jarry in Montreal.
  • The winning pitcher for the Expos was reliever Mike Marshall, who would improve his record to 7-4.  Marshall would finish the season with a 14-11 record, appearing in 92 games, all in relief, finishing 73 games and saving 31.  Mike would also finish 2nd in Cy Young voting in '73, gaining 9 of the 24 first place votes.  Tom Seaver would win the award that season in the NL.

  • Blowout of the night:  Tony Gwynn goes 2 for 4 on the day after his 24th birthday.   Unfortunately, the rest of the Padres only managed 3 hits as the Padres were shut out 7-0 in St. Louis.  Joaquin Andjuar threw the complete game for the Cards, striking out 4.
  • Elsewhere, Toronto beat the Orioles in 10 innings 4-3, blowing a 3-0 lead in the eighth.  Blowing leads late was a common problem for Toronto in the mid 80's and the starter Dave Stieb was a victim of blown leads many times.
  • Finally, Bob Welch of the Dodgers also threw a complete game on this day, scattering 7 hits and allowing only 1 run while Pedro Guerrero went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored as the Dodgers beat the Cubs in Wrigley 5-1.

2001 Fleer Game time #70
  • Carlos Delgado would be the Jays star on 5/3/01, hitting a pair of HRs in Oakland Stadium as the Jays lose to the A's 3-2.  Both of them were hit off of starter Tim Hudson.
  • The game would last 15 innings, with the Jays loading the bases with 2 outs in the top of the 15th only to have Jeff Frye strike out.
  • Both the Jays and Red Sox would lose on this day, remaining tied atop the AL East, with the Yankees just 1.5 games out.
  • Blowout of the day:  the Mariners beat the Red Sox 10-3 with former Jays first baseman John Olerud going 2 for 3 with 2 walks and a solo HR.  John would also steal one of his 3 bases for the season on this day.  The 3 SBs in 2001 would be a career high for John, equaling his total of '99 when he was with the Mets.

I've wanted to do posts like this for quite a while, and now that I can find cards in my collection a helluva lot easier (hooray!) I have the ability to write one of these quickly.

  • A.J. Burnett pitches 7 2/3 shutout innings against the Red Sox, allowing just 3 hits while striking out 5 in a 3-0 win.
  • The Blue Jays finish the day 12-17, 4.5 games behind Tampa Bay.
  • Blow out of the day:  The A's put a 15 spot on the Angels and don't have any hitter drive in more than 2 runs.
  • I picked the Topps Heritage card from 2008 because A.J. looks shaggy in the Topps/Bowman cards (same photo).  Plus the '59 design is fantastic.
