I have had a couple of cards I wanted to show for a few days and here's my chance.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9l6AjRBCsAPHtxOUB2-KdGxq7yf6quhpVFgjX2MzPG4Mc-WNntUMRFFKND9poEBrc--eNlBmbFvZ0EJ3WM_iyCozJSvicnPv1r7HZNTWI_tmAkFkEJ3uxHRtYLIMBCjHzfmZoBJh4qxH3N9QQCXOeAJuen4qLBAsnqoJIiU56SpdNgcEHSerc3FTz/s1365/IMG_20230826_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="981" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9l6AjRBCsAPHtxOUB2-KdGxq7yf6quhpVFgjX2MzPG4Mc-WNntUMRFFKND9poEBrc--eNlBmbFvZ0EJ3WM_iyCozJSvicnPv1r7HZNTWI_tmAkFkEJ3uxHRtYLIMBCjHzfmZoBJh4qxH3N9QQCXOeAJuen4qLBAsnqoJIiU56SpdNgcEHSerc3FTz/w460-h640/IMG_20230826_0001.jpg" width="460" /></a></div><br /><p>Both of the cards on this post are from the same eBay seller. I grabbed the Francona for $4, not bad really and the card is in nice condition. There actually is a top border on the card, and if I had to rate the condition, it would probably go EX-MT. Now Gale Gillingham is another story. When I showed the cards to the Mrs. this morning, she thought the exact same thing that I did, it looks like it was bit by a dog. In a couple of places!!</p><p>So for extra writing credit, I was curious about the Tom Beier card because he's wearing a Dolphins uniform and is listed on the 49ers, so off to Football Reference we go.</p><p>Tom only played 2 seasons in the NFL, 1967 & 1969, with the Dolphins. He was taken in the 10th round of the draft, and in his 2 NFL seasons he had 2 INT's and 2 fumble recoveries as a safety/defensive back. It took a little bit of digging to find out that Tom was traded to the 49ers on April 30th, 1970 only to be released by them that year and not to play again.</p><p>These 4 bring the set build to 47%, almost half way now! Thank you very much Mark for the cards, they are appreciated!!</p><p>Robert</p>Roberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12317401112145746593noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1231164411392128420.post-42459885720394773042023-08-21T22:34:00.000-04:002023-08-21T22:34:18.086-04:00Starting from scratch<p>Most of the focus lately on the blog has been vintage. Vintage football here, vintage baseball there, and maybe an old hockey card or two shows up once in a while.</p><p>Most of the newer stuff has been pushed to the side for the most part, until I decided to start grabbing a few Allen & Ginter cards to try and finish off the 2013 set. </p><p>Then, I thought to myself "I haven't even looked at the 2022 A&G set at all". So I looked around on eBay a bit, and decided it was time to get the set started. But I've been putting a lot of money down on Sportlots, COMC, and some other vintage eBay purchases. Need to cut back on card expenditures a little.</p><p>So I decided not to buy any packs, no single card purchases of any kind for this set. I'm going to do it the hard way. </p><p>Start from scratch. See if I can trade for the whole thing. 350 cards to go. I also liked one of the insert sets I came upon and decided I'll go after that 50 card set...</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg45AfGF1cPv7CCNIKxK6yY7vtwzFB6eN7lCCTZHVl_SXVaexWYbNL70G5mvAQQzNU5LvahTv_4HltpfXOgjwQdqTM5v5PPWRBXg6_dIonyWEgPLIa6D969NQ51IZkJrDW9XaCVOXsZSZoWIinglb6v9-7_FmSmHVClaPG3neqcAUoVQkj9i-nFDSRs/s3232/IMG_20230821_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3232" data-original-width="2848" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg45AfGF1cPv7CCNIKxK6yY7vtwzFB6eN7lCCTZHVl_SXVaexWYbNL70G5mvAQQzNU5LvahTv_4HltpfXOgjwQdqTM5v5PPWRBXg6_dIonyWEgPLIa6D969NQ51IZkJrDW9XaCVOXsZSZoWIinglb6v9-7_FmSmHVClaPG3neqcAUoVQkj9i-nFDSRs/w564-h640/IMG_20230821_0001.jpg" width="564" /></a></div><br /><p>I really like the look of these, and no doubt it's full of star names so none of the cards should be hard to find. I traded for these from fellow TCDB user Charles for some 2016 A&G inserts, 5 for 5. </p><p>The last insert I went after was the Baseball Equipment for the Ages from the 2018 set, and I still have it near by and I do look at it from time to time. </p><p>I'm also going to try and keep posting as I get these inbound. You know, try and keep this little run of posting I've been on going. </p><p>0 for 350 on the base, 5 for 50 on the inserts. Stick around, hopefully we can have some fun with this.</p><p>Robert</p>Roberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12317401112145746593noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1231164411392128420.post-27533253276191610362023-08-20T18:34:00.000-04:002023-08-20T18:34:22.839-04:00The Baker<p>I couldn't find a card of a Butcher (although Garth Butcher comes to mind) and a candlestick maker (Chandler is the proper term, anyone have any cards of Matthew Perry?), but I did get a card from a TCDB trade recently from Ed Sekula (been a long time since trades) that features a Baker...</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoBKePIkIjQ8e4cXZR2SjOAbAWpF5qyJtTru7qwktn54FPM5mn5DhqX32e43YaLenOktcm-_cB5pRbjBZ2MVRc5SqN7vGB50RjKVBTW3uWDXeJm8vYGJWJ96vS52NonG1jHWxLfe27Sl9cMdB7hntbmbDBaS2L98i_gb1kQOjNr8z92IToQQmRSxKN/s1365/IMG_20230820_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="976" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoBKePIkIjQ8e4cXZR2SjOAbAWpF5qyJtTru7qwktn54FPM5mn5DhqX32e43YaLenOktcm-_cB5pRbjBZ2MVRc5SqN7vGB50RjKVBTW3uWDXeJm8vYGJWJ96vS52NonG1jHWxLfe27Sl9cMdB7hntbmbDBaS2L98i_gb1kQOjNr8z92IToQQmRSxKN/w458-h640/IMG_20230820_0001.jpg" width="458" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>This was a rare one for one trade. Don't know why, but apparently when I'm in the mood to trade, it just comes flowing out. I actually mailed out 6 trades in one day; I had to carry them all on a walk to the post office in a Barnes and Noble book bag (there were 2 bubble mailers). </p><p>I made a trade with Richard, 5 for 5. It came from Canada in less than 2 weeks, which has been the norm lately. </p><p>Another John Olerud card starts the trade off:</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2RHyn-X51d8GOjy-fhkKHuMcMzbeHh44BYqMlvVJmuAjpCx_hAeSemRmao_NtZ1cNbje2QbwKRtkA8uKubpfRKzcRwonWK_qjjz1g_hAbeBjJVQVo3sE4xSne35UCqKhoIfw1bB0GM_7cyusbGYkTFV_vfjIXcrWh2kMUqyGXPF4NG3A1UFQ31atL/s1365/IMG_20230819_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="965" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2RHyn-X51d8GOjy-fhkKHuMcMzbeHh44BYqMlvVJmuAjpCx_hAeSemRmao_NtZ1cNbje2QbwKRtkA8uKubpfRKzcRwonWK_qjjz1g_hAbeBjJVQVo3sE4xSne35UCqKhoIfw1bB0GM_7cyusbGYkTFV_vfjIXcrWh2kMUqyGXPF4NG3A1UFQ31atL/w283-h400/IMG_20230819_0001.jpg" width="283" /></a></div><br />Don't know if I've ever seen or picked up an Oh Henry release from 1995, but this card was very light and the picture looks as if it was added to the card after production. If you look at the card at a different angle. it almost looks as if it is photoshopped. Card #335 for the Olerud collection is in hand, just 28 more and I'll have the same total as his 1993 batting average....<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcd6mlAndEa61fwnt6P5bJw0KxtP3c4EHIfNvnQGK3Z3N4Kgazx_t8gpwpNsq_0fmhs-2r3po_wLPON7L5Oemjh1tWPJV7j-SStmS_S5y4_JK-n379EZf-wkvq7GAlKDwrk9wEzyBmvJymfznUha96Tm2pVSF4b5W1X3nrfnOhDCJXvZOieS067OTp/s2005/IMG_20230819_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2005" height="272" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcd6mlAndEa61fwnt6P5bJw0KxtP3c4EHIfNvnQGK3Z3N4Kgazx_t8gpwpNsq_0fmhs-2r3po_wLPON7L5Oemjh1tWPJV7j-SStmS_S5y4_JK-n379EZf-wkvq7GAlKDwrk9wEzyBmvJymfznUha96Tm2pVSF4b5W1X3nrfnOhDCJXvZOieS067OTp/w400-h272/IMG_20230819_0002.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>A pair of 2014 A&G needs knocked off the list. The bios on the backs of the cards show that they are 7 years apart in age, but the Rick Volk photo looks like a kid during his college (or maybe even high school) days. <p></p><p>It's nice that you can tell the all-star cards right away; the NFC cards are solid blue, the AFC cards are solid red, and these are a mix of the two. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_WWH3mrT2bMuGNuZMGunRxF-CG5tTzwSfFZxr1o-WGx7kY-W-yZn2a2l2JWzN25TQLdNP_PsZatzUwV90aNq5b-PX2qlzhZmDVh57jl-gwFhmSK05nMTk-UR0kUDJkNmWOX3CmVweahpXWCwJtVTyQzdoE6YgyPhkgKyJ0GjakD28NNISl8J30nlA/s2997/IMG_20230818_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1370" data-original-width="2997" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_WWH3mrT2bMuGNuZMGunRxF-CG5tTzwSfFZxr1o-WGx7kY-W-yZn2a2l2JWzN25TQLdNP_PsZatzUwV90aNq5b-PX2qlzhZmDVh57jl-gwFhmSK05nMTk-UR0kUDJkNmWOX3CmVweahpXWCwJtVTyQzdoE6YgyPhkgKyJ0GjakD28NNISl8J30nlA/w640-h292/IMG_20230818_0002.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>I'm seeing the end of the golden years for the Packers in this set, and I find Zeke Bratkowski, who is the back up to Bart Starr. Zeke started his career in 1954 with the Bears, had a 2 year gap until he started playing again in 1957. Played a few years for the Bears and then the Rams before joining the Pack in 1963. He played back up from 1963-1968, then again had a 2 year gap before playing his final season in 1971. His only 2 full seasons as a starter were with the Rams in '61 & '62, where he and the team struggled, winning only 3 games over 2 years as the starter. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilujIl2wI9YuZHNNWyqUxne9zZUmpvgczfpj79HOZ19HERGrJjLf_LLqH5dpTjhW_XKhZKWL5KwLMCnxJk64xf70mj4V_YpIPUjzvpVR3OSo6kOYJUnaUuC1bukgzumEqplWJrJvChAZoOdImk7pu1JaR0h4Dtptuwt4DSKKZfqOlTljE0oCiMVPc_/s4202/IMG_20230818_0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4202" data-original-width="2997" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilujIl2wI9YuZHNNWyqUxne9zZUmpvgczfpj79HOZ19HERGrJjLf_LLqH5dpTjhW_XKhZKWL5KwLMCnxJk64xf70mj4V_YpIPUjzvpVR3OSo6kOYJUnaUuC1bukgzumEqplWJrJvChAZoOdImk7pu1JaR0h4Dtptuwt4DSKKZfqOlTljE0oCiMVPc_/w456-h640/IMG_20230818_0003.jpg" width="456" /></a></div><br /><p>I added to this page of AFC players involved in the trade a RC of Marty Schottenheimer I grabbed off of my latest purchase off of eBay. </p><p>Some great names on this scan. Emerson led the AFL in total TD's in 1967 (13) and the NFL in total TD's in 1972 (14).</p><p>So far in the few posts I've done for vintage football sets, I've learned a little something each time. There will be more to come in the future for sure.</p><p>The '71 set is just over 30% done, and the condition of the cards I've received so far has not surprised me in any way. I'm not expecting anything earth shattering as far as mint cards, and as long as there is no writing or paper loss on them, all is good. </p><p>Aesthetically pleasing might the best way to describe older football cards in my world</p><p>Robert</p>Roberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12317401112145746593noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1231164411392128420.post-55295335757394637692023-08-17T22:22:00.000-04:002023-08-17T22:22:30.072-04:00Checklist city<p>I was able to complete a trade in the past week with one of the biggest traders on the TCDB site, Craig (Known as Dukey Devil). It was a 70 for 70 football trade, which is probably the biggest football trade I'll pull off ever on the site.</p><p>It was split up nice, 13 1971 Topps cards, and the remaining 57 were 1977 Topps. The one group of cards that I noticed right away were the checklists from the '77 set.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1D6eqcBrd1lIlRQjMWO4CfEl3Iyb-rPAuWJvBVl6LHHy9z07nWlDlqKCQRtllStfH7n_juSCXkUOcHiRDpAglKc2niXWmJ58bAV-Fls_24whwikXe-aGUAnypwVi44X02Xv0IzKQsSnCSMcIobyEnm1lPnNKRVkMGUIeilbECYTrq1hezCJ2HZlQx/s2976/IMG_20230817_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2778" data-original-width="2976" height="598" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1D6eqcBrd1lIlRQjMWO4CfEl3Iyb-rPAuWJvBVl6LHHy9z07nWlDlqKCQRtllStfH7n_juSCXkUOcHiRDpAglKc2niXWmJ58bAV-Fls_24whwikXe-aGUAnypwVi44X02Xv0IzKQsSnCSMcIobyEnm1lPnNKRVkMGUIeilbECYTrq1hezCJ2HZlQx/w640-h598/IMG_20230817_0001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>The thing you spot immediately is the more popular teams in the set. No surprise on this group of 6 that the Packers, Bears and Cowboys feature quite a few players more than the Oilers, Broncos and Chiefs. The Bears alone have 23 cards in the set. Another thing I spotted is how beautiful the checklists look, there is not a mark on any of them at all. That is going to spoil me for finding spotless checklists for the remainder.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7xWM423Hc_8Ur6yBVtoju3E4Alri2o3QKh0vjq4JQ8dgWhAQQEho9-MTs8xX1Fr5tt3C0GIVh2cCcCfilyfzUfi7cEbJxl5eJMa4Etkee18a0jjVcNV_DlsmFZBK_wi3YaX09A1l7T6Ck6PKpmMhiqXkzBTTX0b7KjmtOQO3Bt9Sq5QlONpMuqS5y/s2997/IMG_20230817_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2778" data-original-width="2997" height="594" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7xWM423Hc_8Ur6yBVtoju3E4Alri2o3QKh0vjq4JQ8dgWhAQQEho9-MTs8xX1Fr5tt3C0GIVh2cCcCfilyfzUfi7cEbJxl5eJMa4Etkee18a0jjVcNV_DlsmFZBK_wi3YaX09A1l7T6Ck6PKpmMhiqXkzBTTX0b7KjmtOQO3Bt9Sq5QlONpMuqS5y/w640-h594/IMG_20230817_0002.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>I was a bit surprised at how many Cardinals were in the set ( I counted 22 ), as they were in an era where the team had a few talented players, but weren't winning titles. The '76 football Cardinals went 10-4 and still only finished 3rd in the NFC east behind the Cowboys (11-3) and the Redskins (10-4). I also learned a little something while writing this post, Don Coryell, he of the Air Coryell teams in San Diego, coached the Cardinals for 5 years (3 straight double digit win seasons) before moving on to the west coast.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO9VaIhUJSUNR5Jaj7V0P9nwlGV54ya6os4FUItjmYvNvG9RuMHS1rye3dBSd_WJcruGC80JVZXyJvIcDSv7UyLkniCs1TsxoidONTCoiIIhaM1Mz3orw738XIzTZ2pYwYkpF855-K6oX5Sa2c27vcYqDlZ5-7WJduZTUYeQ1bjIztBQpAInbK8pJC/s2981/IMG_20230817_0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2981" height="294" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO9VaIhUJSUNR5Jaj7V0P9nwlGV54ya6os4FUItjmYvNvG9RuMHS1rye3dBSd_WJcruGC80JVZXyJvIcDSv7UyLkniCs1TsxoidONTCoiIIhaM1Mz3orw738XIzTZ2pYwYkpF855-K6oX5Sa2c27vcYqDlZ5-7WJduZTUYeQ1bjIztBQpAInbK8pJC/w640-h294/IMG_20230817_0003.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>I also remembered that 1977 was the Buccaneers first season in the NFL. Had to have been tough, they were shut out in their first 2 games, only kicked 3 FG's in their 3rd game, and didn't score the first touchdown in team history until the 4th quarter of the 4th game, and it was a defensive TD to boot! (44 yard fumble return) Oh and they didn't win a game in '77 going 0-14. Ouch</p><p>I'm sure unlike the 60's sets I've featured lately on the blog, a lot of these checklists should have recognizable names and bring back some football memories for sure.</p><p>Robert</p>Roberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12317401112145746593noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1231164411392128420.post-32111388795533913682023-08-16T22:15:00.000-04:002023-08-16T22:15:28.852-04:00Dirty tease<p>I went on a bit of a spending spree at the end of last week. I decided to hit up Sportlots to try and knock a couple of want lists down. Mission succeeded.</p><p>In what might be a record shipping time, I received the first of my 2 orders yesterday. The 2013 A&G want list is all but dead. Just 2 cards remaining now, the Manny Machado RC and the Pele correct version (yes, I do want the writing on the back).</p><p>42 cards were in the lot, 20 of them were very affordable short prints (either 27 or 37 cents).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF3i16Ok3j1jbHimswDyXx_MScnFMb8BRkH2j9axjju2QlyacMRGoWxVfx6kUmrfokCaEiuVDWJFi15Xnfect5vd_HFQUr3Qg7biHsqJLONlBW28rOuPa5rtq6aIpNHKiwX8Q0HqMyLS16fmkgVKrOBOxluuh7JYzBcB2cwxglkeluIJFgnE_8ZqOF/s4314/IMG_20230816_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4314" data-original-width="2986" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF3i16Ok3j1jbHimswDyXx_MScnFMb8BRkH2j9axjju2QlyacMRGoWxVfx6kUmrfokCaEiuVDWJFi15Xnfect5vd_HFQUr3Qg7biHsqJLONlBW28rOuPa5rtq6aIpNHKiwX8Q0HqMyLS16fmkgVKrOBOxluuh7JYzBcB2cwxglkeluIJFgnE_8ZqOF/w442-h640/IMG_20230816_0002.jpg" width="442" /></a></div><br /><p>I took a quick look through the 42 cards while writing the post. Not one non-ball player in the group. Plus a lot of them were legends, Clemente, Gehrig, Rickey Henderson, Jeter, Mays, Whitey Ford, etc.</p><p>Great group of cards for under $20 to nearly finish this set. I don't know if the seller was wanting to give me a bit of a heart attack, but this a picture of the snap case he sent the cards with...</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3-e2DZWtO1cGWfdOVKKi0U14YSlL8jmsUwLS4xerTU7zdYPws_UAH_KCiru4YNFFVUssgmZdw8vDIGfVe7Be856GyUqTD8K1xpyz4qWC2KbysnjTCjFudevTWwCgiQFnrjl17GBS8aIu--ru2dEaZbNylUmBQGWDtG40GSVu_2FyKSi5BI3T_V6wU/s1490/IMG_20230816_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1490" data-original-width="1086" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3-e2DZWtO1cGWfdOVKKi0U14YSlL8jmsUwLS4xerTU7zdYPws_UAH_KCiru4YNFFVUssgmZdw8vDIGfVe7Be856GyUqTD8K1xpyz4qWC2KbysnjTCjFudevTWwCgiQFnrjl17GBS8aIu--ru2dEaZbNylUmBQGWDtG40GSVu_2FyKSi5BI3T_V6wU/s320/IMG_20230816_0001.jpg" width="233" /></a></div><br /><p>Now, I would have been very happy had the case been full of 1961 Topps cards, but I'll settle for what I have now. I've been picking up pieces and parts at shows, on eBay and via the trade route on TCDB.</p><p>Unlike the baseball and hockey vintage sets which for the most part are pricing me out of completion, I don't believe the same thing is going to happen with football. As I work on building these sets, I might end up proving myself wrong. But for starters, I've been having fun acquiring some of the old stuff.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTnWlGN6Kh8iLAuq43_NrxmFHkh91qW0kFJdZ85fTS5TyzK8XamJPepWfasAvMEgF103Bo7VEiGNG6s0eEkkDhkvj9nSi7uqKc_PGk17u_h9sWX-GpmEx329ye8WjFmOyI6UlvhkdHNdhdo5usdKKt6Cb3KfSHtnSqk-dwYC3ReRNaO9x149DJh-tP/s2981/IMG_20230806_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1381" data-original-width="2981" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTnWlGN6Kh8iLAuq43_NrxmFHkh91qW0kFJdZ85fTS5TyzK8XamJPepWfasAvMEgF103Bo7VEiGNG6s0eEkkDhkvj9nSi7uqKc_PGk17u_h9sWX-GpmEx329ye8WjFmOyI6UlvhkdHNdhdo5usdKKt6Cb3KfSHtnSqk-dwYC3ReRNaO9x149DJh-tP/w640-h296/IMG_20230806_0001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>This set I do like, and I've been able to put almost half of it together already. 120 out of 263 are already in house, and I have a COMC order that will put the set over the halfway point.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqX9WZZKs8_btCFFSyJsgusqaeJ2L3gu2TDhVOYgR_jfEcfOTWdm5wDiXd72EZuxopDMZ1eSkhPiMuuXZc_hzTgoDnCEck-nvnbeczexSIfZkf7wKVXT0M-kXymzYiL326UQfm5z0MySZsHEh8-YGaRhmkGzX1gxUVxEGlLECEDXj1Qs6oPRqkPlm3/s2000/IMG_20230806_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1370" data-original-width="2000" height="438" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqX9WZZKs8_btCFFSyJsgusqaeJ2L3gu2TDhVOYgR_jfEcfOTWdm5wDiXd72EZuxopDMZ1eSkhPiMuuXZc_hzTgoDnCEck-nvnbeczexSIfZkf7wKVXT0M-kXymzYiL326UQfm5z0MySZsHEh8-YGaRhmkGzX1gxUVxEGlLECEDXj1Qs6oPRqkPlm3/w640-h438/IMG_20230806_0002.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>This set has reminded of what the vintage sets should be. But last week I decided to get back on the bandwagon and start knocking out a few more off the want list.</p><p>I mentioned it on the post yesterday, had a coupon for 20% off if I purchased $50 or more, so this evening's post is the bulk of the purchase that complemented the Thurman Munson.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1Do0XkF0U-YsY8mqJiLKESMaOeR3oKVIWyw9Prtm_rz9ySMbisHuzoyx20U-6rmQWzDEUgbPKmb4FpkanSOI5AMKCvl95aEzUNWZmApPQ19K69-2hwtzM-9btrpT71a0vdVduvTGiJ0mO60Zu2IfBa_GAx9t_YfoJdLntlQ6_0ndHWRvVv5yGnPSw/s1973/IMG_20230730_0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="1973" height="442" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1Do0XkF0U-YsY8mqJiLKESMaOeR3oKVIWyw9Prtm_rz9ySMbisHuzoyx20U-6rmQWzDEUgbPKmb4FpkanSOI5AMKCvl95aEzUNWZmApPQ19K69-2hwtzM-9btrpT71a0vdVduvTGiJ0mO60Zu2IfBa_GAx9t_YfoJdLntlQ6_0ndHWRvVv5yGnPSw/w640-h442/IMG_20230730_0003.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>Between the Bobby Richardson and the Sparky Anderson, I spent about $17. For the condition that they came with, I was OK with that. I've been seeing the Anderson RC'S about $30 and up, so I saved a bit of money here.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuRjvai2SjA1GoQOQGWdm-ENMsaVQx3hXVLMu86PE6-8QbWka3nVH3lPHdSn05ivHg_0Pl-rfzrMiRtaE9VCkjgUAiCxB8t-GUv3q2kSsSY3YAaB9LmQ63IEd9I9hV3qd-I0muIuzAJpwkzFezIpT4MKdMwjP_gPmig-Oi7k0uJQU7Gus7MDrDkumO/s1978/IMG_20230730_0004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1370" data-original-width="1978" height="444" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuRjvai2SjA1GoQOQGWdm-ENMsaVQx3hXVLMu86PE6-8QbWka3nVH3lPHdSn05ivHg_0Pl-rfzrMiRtaE9VCkjgUAiCxB8t-GUv3q2kSsSY3YAaB9LmQ63IEd9I9hV3qd-I0muIuzAJpwkzFezIpT4MKdMwjP_gPmig-Oi7k0uJQU7Gus7MDrDkumO/w640-h444/IMG_20230730_0004.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>$32 for the Cepeda and Snider combined. Very happy with that. Not the perfect centering most would like, but I really like the condition that these are in. A couple of bigger names off the want list for sure. </p><p>34 cards to go. I've already identified a few cards that are still on the list that can be picked up for a few bucks here and there. </p><p>I've also started discussing with the Mrs. about the big names such as Mantle and Gibson. She actually had prices in her mind that are higher than what's on ebay. This '59 train may have a bigger light at the end of the tunnel than I thought. Fingers crossed!!</p><p>Robert</p>Roberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12317401112145746593noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1231164411392128420.post-56653964232597759162023-07-30T19:37:00.003-04:002023-07-30T19:37:31.163-04:00249 left, and none left<p>July has been brutal, and that's saying something for south Florida. I spent the first week of the month in South Carolina at my sister in law's, but couldn't escape the heat. Several days I left work at 3:45 in the afternoon only to be greeted to 100 degree heat when I opened my car door.</p><p>I do know that there are many of you that are suffering worse heat than I am, and I certainly pity you. But when I can say that I've been spoiled by the summer's I've had here in Florida for the 8 years I've been here, 2023 has been brutal so far in comparison.</p><p>I don't think August will be much better, but at least today I've got the gumption (yes I used that word) to sit down and write a post.</p><p>In July I've completed 8 trades, not bad considering how hot it is and I'm sure a lot of collectors would rather be doing other things beside roasting at their computers. One trade I finished recently was a 2 for 1 deal. One of the 2 cards actually helped me finish a set!</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8RlowUwYAhZwlgUF1NMXPHQA4_aI_wibDfISVH09rUYIp_hKnnxceAOAPLXQeP4f4504w_Q4E_N0Gj8Axr4izJb2D2B9s2PsY7qjdnihw-dWceBLoKfJIo2k_Bb_LUuMjMFqqNetXVIbjTLj6qeBEMq_LYr4iCjzA4oKa2iCgI711JeGg3Efn3LQl/s1365/IMG_20230730_0001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="970" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8RlowUwYAhZwlgUF1NMXPHQA4_aI_wibDfISVH09rUYIp_hKnnxceAOAPLXQeP4f4504w_Q4E_N0Gj8Axr4izJb2D2B9s2PsY7qjdnihw-dWceBLoKfJIo2k_Bb_LUuMjMFqqNetXVIbjTLj6qeBEMq_LYr4iCjzA4oKa2iCgI711JeGg3Efn3LQl/w454-h640/IMG_20230730_0001.jpg" width="454" /></a></div><br />I've had the Fernando Tatis Jr. card as the only one on my want list for the 2020 A&G set for a while now. I thought that eventually this would be part of a purchase somewhere down the road. Luckily I received it in as part of an offer, and I quickly made the trade to finish off the 10th A&G set in my collection. I have 3 or 4 Allen and Ginter sets that are reasonably close to being finished, and I'm hoping to knock those want lists down with a couple more trades in August.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9S5rsn4HyTpDcufwlfgTNnm2YZh4xKxctHIPi0V2SvkEVgQeCfpVbByWF7rQwIWJUn3u8fM-7fQrcqdg7srcNoui8GUjBDxr63EN8CHWPs_GXDcaXu7ldwudA6KMJ7_ggFqSUv2LLdmacyOo-kNiSROkA_VS0a9axAhjM67AMtajtuqBHf10BJISn/s1360/IMG_20230730_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1360" data-original-width="986" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9S5rsn4HyTpDcufwlfgTNnm2YZh4xKxctHIPi0V2SvkEVgQeCfpVbByWF7rQwIWJUn3u8fM-7fQrcqdg7srcNoui8GUjBDxr63EN8CHWPs_GXDcaXu7ldwudA6KMJ7_ggFqSUv2LLdmacyOo-kNiSROkA_VS0a9axAhjM67AMtajtuqBHf10BJISn/w464-h640/IMG_20230730_0002.jpg" width="464" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The Thurman Munson 1972 Topps In action card was part of a purchase. This one seller on ebay had a deal where if you buy $50 worth of cards, you got a 20% discount. Can't complain about that! Again<p>First off, just want to congratulate the Night Owl on 5300 posts. Incredible number! I'm on #2144 here, just a little bit behind.</p><p>So last night, instead of writing, I took to putting away the recently acquired '59 Topps cards that I've blogged about. While doing that, I did something that was long overdue. I checked the binder and compared it against my current want list.</p><p>Wouldn't you know it, another bookkeeping mistake. Turns out I was missing two common cards, 324 & 325. How I missed those 2 I will never know. But they are on the want list now and after today's post I'll need just 38 cards to finish up the set. </p><p>So, while searching for the latest '59 card to bring the set closer to completion, I had to find a couple of other cards from the same seller (as always) to try and help some other sets along.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihPG8fgONkrRgPOdtmjdzHVG-5STllE1oih9Q71vV7hOLxim51YmJJMste80W2MjBZylE3nJamyFFLbiRvIpd8JHxOKdwXJQf3vgX85tHHdziExxX7CrO6FMTR7CWBPNxXmSSG-hAYfdGD_xHQsBQjNgXVDPwdVTcdWsnTtUG4AYup14YH381IpQ/s1059/IMG_20230615_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1059" data-original-width="770" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihPG8fgONkrRgPOdtmjdzHVG-5STllE1oih9Q71vV7hOLxim51YmJJMste80W2MjBZylE3nJamyFFLbiRvIpd8JHxOKdwXJQf3vgX85tHHdziExxX7CrO6FMTR7CWBPNxXmSSG-hAYfdGD_xHQsBQjNgXVDPwdVTcdWsnTtUG4AYup14YH381IpQ/w466-h640/IMG_20230615_0001.jpg" width="466" /></a></div>A '71 Fergie Jenkins was a good start. I managed to get 5 of the high numbered cards off of the '59 Topps want list into the house about 10 days ago. I never thought at the beginning of 2023 that I'd be taking a whooping stick to the wants for this set that have been on the list for years. Grabbing these cards all from the same seller for a little over $42 was worth the budget busting.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5wuhfLdlU77vkMhqYq6gPm_vg-Y_l10mOvuIH6kETbQ07fwdXElpuu45q55jViKXE8NUC_FcZObHUj6fiJoyaiqgVn1Danx0yUlhsaIdKKUG8ay6-186Ubtuvb9pvrFN7o5vHTx76zvGPGLCLK9kziQ7mIyqLefRtF_9xNa5W3MI2nTo8qNiRRQ/s1084/IMG_20230613_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1084" data-original-width="780" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5wuhfLdlU77vkMhqYq6gPm_vg-Y_l10mOvuIH6kETbQ07fwdXElpuu45q55jViKXE8NUC_FcZObHUj6fiJoyaiqgVn1Danx0yUlhsaIdKKUG8ay6-186Ubtuvb9pvrFN7o5vHTx76zvGPGLCLK9kziQ7mIyqLefRtF_9xNa5W3MI2nTo8qNiRRQ/w460-h640/IMG_20230613_0001.jpg" width="460" /></a></div>I decided to scan the 5 cards individually, instead of the group at one shot. Not on purpose, just how it has been with life being busy over the last few months. But I'm writing again, and in case you're not aware, I started a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. collection. I've always enjoyed watching Vladdy play, the excitement you see when a big hit is made or a crucial play is executed with him on the end of it at first base is always evident.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgML8d7ybECzTOFa25vNi3LhR6OtsP6MSXCyNZYjpk5OzN432I0hLKM0uN6q7bUPpQnnDWpGFPTEXffO252lvj-VWR3VTSIJfTPYVlBHl2VmZ0i37ZPRr-vpxZenA64Dkyd9xPhYqRdAO5UFn8qw0F4ND-KbGq8gcbT4oGjvi_GSZZcO34N8og0Bw/s1978/IMG_20230611_0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="1978" height="442" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgML8d7ybECzTOFa25vNi3LhR6OtsP6MSXCyNZYjpk5OzN432I0hLKM0uN6q7bUPpQnnDWpGFPTEXffO252lvj-VWR3VTSIJfTPYVlBHl2VmZ0i37ZPRr-vpxZenA64Dkyd9xPhYqRdAO5UFn8qw0F4ND-KbGq8gcbT4oGjvi_GSZZcO34N8og0Bw/w640-h442/IMG_20230611_0003.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>So while this collection never will be large, if an opportunity comes up here and there to pick up a reasonably priced card, I'll take advantage. The only want list I have on TCDB for VGJ is the 30 card player highlights insert set from 2020 Topps, 2 of them visible above from a recently completed trade on the site. These 2 bring my total to 8 out of the 30 cards, and the other 22 are the only want list I have for him. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbqRybfD125mdI08wHSnmzqInEIp2F-FeBrOzmVYb5MqmETFkHJjp8SDFKaG7E76N7aGdoqUddpDCc6ynmbcqmLa_ylplBBS-biKCFDQv_oLA38w8YLf1jcQ0fEQHOHUJLFAJtghyWZF9xuQTfuIIsY2xDHk0scwMPx0Z_6qRc-2-wzwR2vR5S4Q/s1984/IMG_20230611_0004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="1984" height="440" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbqRybfD125mdI08wHSnmzqInEIp2F-FeBrOzmVYb5MqmETFkHJjp8SDFKaG7E76N7aGdoqUddpDCc6ynmbcqmLa_ylplBBS-biKCFDQv_oLA38w8YLf1jcQ0fEQHOHUJLFAJtghyWZF9xuQTfuIIsY2xDHk0scwMPx0Z_6qRc-2-wzwR2vR5S4Q/w640-h440/IMG_20230611_0004.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>I bought a Series 1 blaster of 2023 Topps a couple months ago, and I was lucky enough to nab these 2 cards from the box. Young Vlad got card #300 in the set, the old hero number from days gone by. Interesting on the back of the Stars of MLB insert card is a discussion of exit velocities that Vlad has performed in his first 4 season. You won't see anything like that on vintage cards. </p><p>This collection is nothing like the long time stars I have like Sakic, Thome, or Fitzgerald. But a card here or there of the young Jays 1st baseman certainly won't be turned down. </p><p>Robert</p>Roberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12317401112145746593noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1231164411392128420.post-26586914160957285952023-06-11T10:21:00.000-04:002023-06-11T10:21:03.835-04:00Back in black<p>Been taking a few days off here and there between blog posts. There's no doubt thought that blogging is still in the front of my mind even when I go a few days away from the keyboard.</p><p>Trades are coming in at a nice clip (I just accepted one this morning) and it's always great to move some cards on to a person that's looking for them for their collection. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZekx8_3YejUZQmCCPr03fFVgNB-Vl2UsF4JMdbagR_tSAaksEnRy1tnmCwlFN7taoFMdSG64fwOJXfVEIcMypEhlxai6XboLWu-oo5ciXstwGKoQjk9XV7uo4Pk-MgnkcR7-91TwddIqpuaoCDANpl55iQ4Njvs6_3SgVyrSXKFnVta96uArSrA/s2981/IMG_20230611_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2933" data-original-width="2981" height="630" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZekx8_3YejUZQmCCPr03fFVgNB-Vl2UsF4JMdbagR_tSAaksEnRy1tnmCwlFN7taoFMdSG64fwOJXfVEIcMypEhlxai6XboLWu-oo5ciXstwGKoQjk9XV7uo4Pk-MgnkcR7-91TwddIqpuaoCDANpl55iQ4Njvs6_3SgVyrSXKFnVta96uArSrA/w640-h630/IMG_20230611_0001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>While the 2008 Upper Deck Baseball Heroes set isn't at the top of anyone's discussion list at the moment (I doubt it's in the top 50), I received a couple of trades recently that involved a few of the black parallels. While it's not a critical part of my collection, it does keep the modern card portion of the trade list going (I have 3 other parallels from this set on my TCDB lists) and helps to keep the trade lines moving.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqwCfEK29MRnpooClYJCFevoHBmQgiHuR5JyijqfbVamxUzPLosGBPmXrmjwDhqZYMb1jdIgtVPGfwqB8xsNySurkPhGSrag6EuLtWNJ0CcE1npcLnbKRmq2O3soQCIa5fX-Klm3DsvzsBbnlU3NEIxJ-Zq74Cf8ErxTWybZGG5oqeNKM7HrtFKQ/s4176/IMG_20230611_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4176" data-original-width="2986" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqwCfEK29MRnpooClYJCFevoHBmQgiHuR5JyijqfbVamxUzPLosGBPmXrmjwDhqZYMb1jdIgtVPGfwqB8xsNySurkPhGSrag6EuLtWNJ0CcE1npcLnbKRmq2O3soQCIa5fX-Klm3DsvzsBbnlU3NEIxJ-Zq74Cf8ErxTWybZGG5oqeNKM7HrtFKQ/w458-h640/IMG_20230611_0002.jpg" width="458" /></a></div><br /><p>I really do want to put together this set; it's an easy build at 200 cards. While the big story line on the blog lately has been the pursuit of a couple of vintage sets, over the years I've managed to put together two parallel sets for my collection. I guess you could say that the parallel universe is another part of my collection that intrigues me, and I do hope one day to be able to show off a complete set of this black parallel.</p><p>I've only got 57 out of the 200 so far, so if you have any laying around that you're looking to move, hit me up on TCDB for a trade. It would be appreciated.</p><p>Robert</p>Roberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12317401112145746593noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1231164411392128420.post-83966754496890641032023-06-02T20:52:00.001-04:002023-06-02T20:52:45.407-04:00Come for the football, stay for the 59 Topps<p>Been meaning to post these for a few days, but life getting in the way. But it sounds a lot better that 1971-72 OPC is down to just 50 remaining. I think I may be able to get one more purchase similar to this one to knock down a few more cards at once to twin the two sets. Then more of the big names will start. </p><p>Ugh!</p><p>Robert</p>Roberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12317401112145746593noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1231164411392128420.post-20603548949012694502023-05-20T19:12:00.000-04:002023-05-20T19:12:49.103-04:00Damn disappointing, well maybe 2/3 wasn't so bad<p>So I hit ebay last Friday, had an idea to start knocking down a pair of want lists at the same time. The idea worked, but then when the third card arrived I was a bit disappointed. It was my own fault though, as you'll read soon enough.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzI44ddDiswyGFhjfvyxDki300NrTU7NaA69ndKfwA3NKA1MVZd4z3M4iJJh1hlQdKQtxYpF2niFJCF60-rCS8klAD97YvYAPy7yF1H5nXqDDB265h3jkyQip5fVVkxZmAwjwz_kXpfxHH51kFWR0XnBNSDxL2pKaepqGV0tBb1Zdz48v9Z8YCIA/s1023/IMG_20230520_0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="713" data-original-width="1023" height="446" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzI44ddDiswyGFhjfvyxDki300NrTU7NaA69ndKfwA3NKA1MVZd4z3M4iJJh1hlQdKQtxYpF2niFJCF60-rCS8klAD97YvYAPy7yF1H5nXqDDB265h3jkyQip5fVVkxZmAwjwz_kXpfxHH51kFWR0XnBNSDxL2pKaepqGV0tBb1Zdz48v9Z8YCIA/w640-h446/IMG_20230520_0003.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>My goal is to start grabbing some cards off of a pair of long time builds. '59 Topps was one of them. I keyed on this card during my search and found a copy for less than $20, which for me was very exciting as any time you find a card from a vintage set featuring Willie Mays on the front for less than $20, you have to do the happy dance. My balance hasn't been good lately, so I stuck to a large grin when it arrived.</p><p>43 cards to finish this set. I'm hoping I can get it done before too long.</p><p>Now, the disappointing part.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0tsohwpFIKf2OtBWrMbUO-UOl028CnFQzOoSqRQAGBRFowBdOJiAGXJObw_3xy6MHR9cX-xYyf7VjYIQ4QPv-BOaqIUtqxVIu0QJVRyeJwr8m0UejUtrUvpwE_oSbfPvhjqvwcG5zGCRN-xyqrHcCnV-G3HA-r5UG9GfZV7_K7JheIZREWcHgAA/s1494/IMG_20230520_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1020" data-original-width="1494" height="436" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0tsohwpFIKf2OtBWrMbUO-UOl028CnFQzOoSqRQAGBRFowBdOJiAGXJObw_3xy6MHR9cX-xYyf7VjYIQ4QPv-BOaqIUtqxVIu0QJVRyeJwr8m0UejUtrUvpwE_oSbfPvhjqvwcG5zGCRN-xyqrHcCnV-G3HA-r5UG9GfZV7_K7JheIZREWcHgAA/w640-h436/IMG_20230520_0001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>My thought is to "twin" these sets in pursuit of finishing them both. With the '59 Topps now at 43 cards, the 71-72 OPC hockey set seemed like a good idea to twin them and work on completing them both at the same time. Sounds like a good idea right?</p><p>Knock off a couple of cards for the 71-72 set as it was at 59 cards left on the want list, so grabbing these two for a little over $10 total was a no-brainer, right?</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi27tOfydPAimD4YPLqScyLVetlNljdfiH-O-fdgde3ssNKgzhWpGR2xp0wduOicv0KqIyH1-2iIqEMs8yJgOETcOJnubkvd65KVRnMqZLRh9vbHL3VGCpbiZQklA7OgBugf4yftq6aMSnmJuWwcUT-iU6awQPSORafogwM8LuaALgZJe2qbBU1cQ/s1788/IMG_20230520_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1028" data-original-width="1788" height="368" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi27tOfydPAimD4YPLqScyLVetlNljdfiH-O-fdgde3ssNKgzhWpGR2xp0wduOicv0KqIyH1-2iIqEMs8yJgOETcOJnubkvd65KVRnMqZLRh9vbHL3VGCpbiZQklA7OgBugf4yftq6aMSnmJuWwcUT-iU6awQPSORafogwM8LuaALgZJe2qbBU1cQ/w640-h368/IMG_20230520_0002.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>Partly the seller's fault on this mistake, but mostly I'm crediting myself with the error. As you can plainly see, the Goring is the OPC version. Beauty!</p><p>The Gilbert is the 71-72 TOPPS version. I looked again, the auction plainly said 71-72 OPC Rod Gilbert. I was so happy to grab the card at just under $5 that I didn't look at BOTH pictures on the listing. The front, no problem. The 2nd picture has the back of the card. I'd been procrastinating putting them away to their rightful places, and this morning was spent taking care of that.</p><p>Now, I have a pair of trades that I've removed from the acquired pile, scanned them both, and now I've started building up a new pile of cards to put away. All of them less than $1.39 apiece. The Andre White is a bit off center but overall I spent just under $8 to get these home. My favorite part of the cards is the old time logos in the upper right corner on the front. Reminds me of vintage all day.</p><p>Another thing that I like about chasing this set is the size. 219 cards total is a very achievable size for me to collect and 29 cards in I still think that I can build this reasonably quickly (less than a few years).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilt-Sy-1tEkkaIsYIpg95ed2HVIwxXHFpU3_82yfji4vLgRDrqCU906cOJsTJ_jNebqZY61a6teQsxjxVG0VQWd-oeTYH-GxgGMwKci8238T_HxKyeC5Ig3A6kpczvTXXD6psoFB1kE8CrAALz7lolpxMzzemmeTek8zwumdCY0hbwXLbnU2SRow/s2429/IMG_20230517_0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1221" data-original-width="2429" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilt-Sy-1tEkkaIsYIpg95ed2HVIwxXHFpU3_82yfji4vLgRDrqCU906cOJsTJ_jNebqZY61a6teQsxjxVG0VQWd-oeTYH-GxgGMwKci8238T_HxKyeC5Ig3A6kpczvTXXD6psoFB1kE8CrAALz7lolpxMzzemmeTek8zwumdCY0hbwXLbnU2SRow/w640-h322/IMG_20230517_0002.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>I put these 3 cards in my watch list, and the next day I had discounts offered on all 3!! The Bosch and Allen cards are high numbers from the '68 set and they are in really nice shape. $3.50 apiece was a good deal that came my way. The Bill Skowron '59 Topps card was my original focus when I started surfing for cards. It wound up being just $5.50, and it knocks down the want list for this set to 44 cards. </p><p>For these purchases, the 3 is definitely greater than the 5. Both in price and in sets that are being actively chased. </p><p>I have another card for the '59 Topps set that I picked up for a nice price recently, that one will be part of a post when I receive another purchase in the mail.</p><p>Robert</p><p><br /></p>Roberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12317401112145746593noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1231164411392128420.post-90478351076167978512023-05-14T09:42:00.003-04:002023-05-14T09:42:43.918-04:00TCDB Trade 606: Are you ready for some football?<p>Received a trade offer from <a href="https://thepedestriancollector.blogspot.com/">Chris</a> after the Leafs won the first round to celebrate the long overdue series win. For the longest time I wasn't really interested in building these sets, but now over the course of the past few months I have had some fun starting to put them together, and reminiscing about the players from the 70's and 80's that brought a lot of memories back. I've only recently started the 1980 Topps set which are seen here with the Cliff Branch/Mark Cotney cards. 10% done on this one, a long way to go but no hurry because of all the other sets I'm trying to put together. </p><p>Thank you for the trade Chris, it is appreciated!</p><p>Robert</p>Roberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12317401112145746593noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1231164411392128420.post-5021224597278760122023-05-10T19:00:00.008-04:002023-05-10T19:00:00.138-04:00Trade 605: Spoiled with this oneA nice bit of trades have happened lately on the TCDB website for me.
