What's next? Quarterfinals (4) 1976 Topps vs (5) 1967 Topps

I made a small mistake on yesterday's post.  I said that if '76 wins this weeks match we would have two 70's sets vs two 60's sets in the semis.   '59 Topps is still in the battle, so this weeks match will determine which decade will have 2 sets left in the hunt.

How they got here:

1976 defeated 1970  16-4
1967 defeated 1962  16-9

How big a head start do I have on these sets?

1976 Topps:  Very Good  375 out of 660 (with a few needing upgrades)
1967 Topps:  Minimal        22 out of 609

Favorite card that I own from each set so far:

1974:  # 554 Ray Fosse (A great look, almost as if he's nailed a runner trying to steal second)
1963:  # 129 Phil Roof  (combination of old time glove, sleeveless jersey and what appears to be a jacket under his jersey is a weird but great look in my opinion).

25 votes last week, a great turnout, thank you!  We already have one blog pushing for one of these sets....read here for further details.

thanks for reading, and voting, Robert

  1. I love the 76 design but my vote is for the impossible dream season for my Red Sox 67 gets my vote

  2. 1967, without question. Love the photography in the set. They are not all gems but those that are..are terrific. I moved here to Houston for the first time in the summer of 1967. We lived near a grocery store and since i didn't know a soul I spent that summer running over to buy and open packs of the '67 Topps. Never finished the set but maybe some day I will.

If in doubt just open a browser tab and google image 1967 Topps baseball. Do the same for the '74 set. Scroll a bit and switch back and forth.

  3. Gonna have to go with 76 here. Both are great sets though,

  4. '76 was the 2nd set I collected so there's a real attachment there, and the Schmidt and Bench and Reggie cards OH MY GAWD.

But '76 also has some stinkers, and '67 is just a beautiful set. Going with '67 (but hope you don't have to collect it because it's madness).

  5. 1967. Great photos, hall of famers, multi-player cards, and BOB UECKER! What's not to like?

  6. Looks like I'm going with the early majority for once this round. I'm voting for the '67 set because it is just a fantastic set.

  7. I see the allure of both sets; I don't know that I even own any 1967 Topps at this point.

That said...I grew up listening on the radio to Bob Uecker calling Brewers games. My grandfather and I would be outside, listening to a crackling AM station in Milwaukee -- usually 620 WTMJ -- to hear what the Brewers would do. My grandpa had a bunch of alternate pronunciations for players -- Ceily Cooper, Ben Ovalteen (Oglivie), Gordon Thomas, Robby Yount -- so for that alone, I'm going with the 1967 set for Bob Uecker. And my grandpa.

  8. Add me to the ever growing list of 67 supporters. I like the look of both sets, but like how 67 has more of a picture and less of a border.

  9. 76. I just have some great memories of those cards when I was a kid. After the 77 set Topps never really matched or in my opinion came close to the look of the cards from 71-77. Before 71, my view of most of the earlier sets were that they were nothing special, I really had no interest in collecting any of them. I really like a few of them, but not that many.

  10. 76 has always been kinda blah for me. 67 is good in its simplicity. 67 it is.

  11. Both sets are ones I love enough to desperately hope that Topps doesn't screw them up too badly when it comes time to "Heritage" them.

It's a tough choice, but if aliens wiped my brain and both sets were brand-new to me, 1976 is still the set I'd want to collect.

...Especially since it looks like '67 already has this won, and I don't want it to be a blowout.

  13. Gotta be 1967. There are some nice sets post-1970, but stuff that was around before I was born is just groovy man.

  14. 1967. I finished the '76 set and it rarely draws me to go look at it. I don't know why. The correlation between the year of the set and my handle does not play into this vote. :)

  15. 1976 is an underrated set. One vote for 1976. :)

  16. Not sure if I still have time to vote, but if I do: 1967.
Good luck if that's the final winner. The 6th series is especially difficult to piece together. I spent approximately 15 years working on my set. Of course that was per-Internet.
