What's next? Quarterfinals: (1) 1965 Topps vs (8) 1959 Topps

A match up featuring two sets that easily could have made it to the final if I were doing all the voting.  A great pair of cards on the scan, featuring a pair of NL Central clubs battling it out for the title again this year.

This round instead of the "tale of the tape", I'm going to answer a trio of questions:

How they got here:

1965 defeated 1978  17-2
1959 defeated 1966  11-9

How big a head start do I have on these sets?

1965 Topps:  Minimal  17 out of 598
1959 Topps:  Minimal  10 out of 572

Favorite card that I own from each set so far:

1965:  # 303 Rico Carty (Rico played for the Blue Jays)
1959:  # 134 Jim McDaniel (I like the Sporting News rookie card design)

I really like how the backs look on both of these sets, so that's a wash for me.

So, which set do you want me to build?  Let me know in the comments.

thanks for reading, and voting, Robert

  1. I gotta go with the 65's in this one.

  2. I love the '65 set. It's Top Ten Topps for sure. But I'll always, always stand up and fight for the '59. It grew on me with every card. It's not perfect, some of the 'special cards' are not so special, but overall it's a fabulous, groundbreaking set.

I'm voting '59 and putting my blog space where my mouth is.

  3. I want to vote against 65, because I think it will win it all. But I can't. 65 it is.

  4. Tough call. I'm gonna go with '65.

  5. After the Heritage version this year, I'm tired of the 1965 design. And, Commishbob's blog talked me into 1959. Actually, I'd have voted for 1959 without Bob, but his blog post was the coup de grace.

I know, he and I are a minority here, but I love those 1959 designs.

  6. I voted against the '59s in the first round - can't do it twice. 1959.

  7. This is a tough choice, I like both sets... but the 1965 cards have the awesome backs, and the front design is nicer and allows more room for the photo. Another vote cast for 1965.

  8. I like 65, but I love 59. 1965 has the pennant, but if you take that one element away, it could be any set. 1959 is such a unique look on a card set that I have to vote for it.

  9. Like Tony L., Heritage kinda burnt me out on 65 a little.. though I still love the cartoons on the back. But I'll go with 1959 here.

  10. I like both years but gotta go with my Birth year 1965. Still trying to "Strive for '65" before April and my Birthday on the 4th. Sadly I don't think I'll finish it. :(

  11. Wow. Gotta go with '59. Always in my top three sets of all time. Not only for the e.e. cummings style names, but the classic colors and logos. But primarily because I'm 23 cards away from finishing it myself (if you count the five "option" variations etc.)

  12. Two excellent sets. I landed cards from both sets in my bargain-basement pickup of vintage cards at the card show over the weekend. One thing that stood out (besides all the writing on the cards) is how beautiful and colorful the 1965 set is. 1965 it is.

  13. The 1965 set is really nice, but 1959 beats it by a nose. I love the colors in 1959.

  14. 1959. I really don't have anything profound to say, or words to support my decision.

    Just 1959.

  15. 1965 for sure! I'm working on getting that set autographed, and it's one of my favorites.
