10 steps closer to the '64 set

Won a cheapo eBay auction last week, 10 more cards for the '64 set for just under $5 shipped.  I just realized that I'm almost a quarter of the way through the set already.  This realization is tempered by the fact that I really haven't started to look for any of the big names/big dollar cards in the set, such as Mantle, Rose, Clemente, Aaron, etc.

I'm sure those 4 will shock me back into reality when I start looking.

No matter, we'll have a look at the 10 that I picked up in the auction.  First, let's enjoy a couple of the cards that could be a "before and after" puzzle on Wheel of Fortune.

Starting to pickup the Yankees here and there, a good thing.

I'm sure that a lot of the card veterans out there have seen something like this before, but this is the first time I believe I've seen an off center back with a well centered front.  Card # 105 is Woody Held of the Cleveland Indians, and here is the front for you:

Pretty good shape if you ask me.  Now here is the back.

How bizarre is that?  OK, maybe it's bizarre only for me.  Woody actually had some pretty decent seasons as an Indian, 29 HR in 1959 isn't too shabby.

This next guy I'm sure you've seen many times on video giving up one of the most famous HRs in baseball history on April 8th, 1974.

Al Downing gave up the 715th HR in Hank Aaron's career, I'm sure you've seen the video of Hank running the bases in Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta and having the fans chase him around the bases.  Of course, my ignorance of players such as Al Downing led my curiosity to look up his career numbers.  I had no idea he played for the Yankees for so long...5 double digit win seasons between 1963-1967, a 20 win, 2.68 ERA season for the Dodgers in 1971 garnered him enough votes to finish 3rd in Cy Young voting (behind Fergie Jenkins and Tom Seaver).

Here's the final 6 cards of the lot:

All in pretty decent shape, including the first World Series card from this set that I've obtained.  Hopefully the other 445 cards I have left to obtain are in as good condition as the first 142.  Only time will tell.

Thanks for reading, Robert

  1. A couple of things:

I must MUST own that off center Woody Held. We can talk about that later.

I just helped Kevin at The 1965 Topps Project finish off his set, so now I need a new pet project for my altruism, and you '64 set might be it. I haven't looked, but do you have a wantlist yet? I have found a good deal of joy in helping others build their vintage sets, rather than doing my own.

  2. The best thing about this set are the World Series cards. One of my "next objectives" (I have about 400 of them) is to obtain all the World Series cards from this set.

  3. I just know that when Heritage emulates this set next year, that "Angels Backstops" card will turn in to a "Yankees Backstops". How much you want to bet?

I don't think I've ever seen that world series card. You think the Yankee bullpen is heckling Fairly in that picture? Or are they above that? lol
