A blast from the past: 1999-00 UD MVP hockey Silver Script

Good Sunday to you all, I hope that you have been able to find me over the past day or two now that I've changed the blog address.  I've said to myself all along that I would start doing some more hockey posts, so here's another parallel set that I started to put together in the late 90's that I never finished (but you knew that already, didn't you?)

The Upper Deck MVP set from 99-00 was a small set of only 220 cards.  The parallel sets actually had 3 tier's;
First tier was the Super Script, serial numbered to 25, Second tier was the Gold parallel which was serial numbered to 100, and finally the set that I'm working on, the silver script, which was not serial numbered, and inserted at a ratio of 1:2 packs.

The MVP set was a very cheap price point for cards, I believe back then they were $1.49 a pack.  I'm not sure how much love this set received back then, because in the late 90's there was a lot of competition for your hockey card dollar.  Upper Deck released several sets that year, Pacific was still pumping out sets like Omega, Dynagon and Aurora, Be A Player sets were very popular back then with the one a pack auto cards, and Topps had a handful of sets that year, including Gold Label which was also very well received.

Here's a scan of a couple of silver signature cards:

Notice the difference in the two cards.  There were a handful of cards, such as Damian Rhodes on the left, where there wasn't an actual signature.  I'm guessing the reason for this was the company didn't get authorization in time to use it.  The Paul Kariya card on the right is a great example of a typical signature on these cards, it doesn't overwhelm the card and is very legible.

I'm not very far from completing this set, only 31 cards out of the 220 to go.  This will be one of the lists I take with me up to the big show next weekend, hoping to get this one out of the way.  I'll be featuring a few of the different hockey card sets I'll be trying to complete this week, so keep an eye out for those.

Thanks for reading, Robert

  1. Show's getting close! Less than a week to go!

    That means I have to get my traders sorted out unless I'm going to sit on them for six more months.

    This is a set I haven't seen a lot of. I took a decade off when things went crazy. It's not bad looking.
